Homeschooling in Illinois could look different if a law being considered by legislators moves forward.

The Homeschool Act, also known as HB2827, would create a set of requirements for homeschooled students and educators. It includes things like informing a child's designated public school or district that they are being homeschooled, requiring any child taking part in school activities on or off school ground provide proof of immunizations and health examinations and setting requirements for the topics and content homeschool children learn.

The bill says the "laws of this state do not adequately protect homeschooled children in situations when notification of the type of schooling of the child would help reduce vulnerabilities to abuse and neglect."

According to the State Board of Education, in Illinois, the only specific requirement for homeschooling is that certain subject areas be taught. Required subjects include language arts, physical development and health, mathematics, biological and physical science, social science and fine arts.

Under HB2827, several new guidelines would be added. Some of the main changes include:

They tried this nonsense in Michigan years ago. I told my congressman to his face that he had no business interfering with my family or even know that I existed.

He did have such jurisdiction over public schools which were complete failures. At the time Detroit had a 19% graduation rate. I told him to put his efforts there.

We now live in another state where there are some similar restrictions, although not for vaccination status. We can either report to the public school indoctrination centers or to what they call an umbrella school. We found one that is very, very hands off and does the absolute minimum to stay within the law.

Ours are all adults, one is married, all are strong and independent and well employed.

The bill says the "laws of this state do not adequately protect homeschooled children in situations when notification of the type of schooling of the child would help reduce vulnerabilities to abuse and neglect.”

What they mean is ..”the laws of this state do not adequately expose homeschooled children to WOKE ideoligy and the bullying culture, and they have the dangerous tendency to learn to think for themselves.”

That wasn’t in the article. The thrust of the new law was to insure that the three R’s were taught and parents looked after immunizations. It also appeared that guidelines were established to allow home schooled students to participate in public schools sports and labs.

Did you, by any chance, go read the text of the law itself? I did. The law is designed to protect homeschooling, provide public facilities for use by home-schooled students, insure the safety of home-schooled students, and to establish minimum standards for the provided education.

Nowhere in the text was any wording related to lqbtqi present.

Many people here at FR are into knee-jerk negative reactions with respect to governance, all the while ignorant. What sort of citizen in a self-governed Nation despises his own government so much?

These changes are very similar to the hoops we have to jump thru in order to homeschool in PA. We also must keep “attendance”, have evaluations every year (done by an accredited teacher) and submit standardized tests in several grades. It’s time consuming, invasive and it somewhat forces “school at home”, which is the exact opposite of what works with children who have ADD/ADHD or other learning differences.

Luckily, we have always had very understanding evaluators, and my kids/grandkids were blessed with God-given “smarts”, so we manage. It didn’t hurt that their test scores were/are through the roof and my middle son tested into community college in 10th grade.

Uh, the reason people homeschool their children is to protect them from abuse and neglect.

Speaking for myself only, it’s not a case of “despising” my government, rather it’s a “take care of your own (miserably failing) schools” before you stick your nose in my family’s business when we are doing just fine without your “help”.

I know there are people who claim to homeschool but let the kids laze around all day watching TV and playing video games... but honestly, those kids are probably ahead of their peers just doing that. Plenty of ways to learn to read, write, do basic math and function properly in society without forced government schooling.

Sure. But many parents would do exactly like you said and let their kids laze around all day. There is no way that could possibly put them ahead of anyone under any school conditions.

But, you have missed the entire point of the bill. Why bitch if you can't do it ignorantly, right?

I don't know if you have ever worked in a school or not. I don't know if you keep up with the news or cogitate about the implications of the news stories or even the interactions behind the scenes regarding the news. If you had, you would know that there are homes that abuse their children far worse than anything they experience in schools. You would also know that a lot of child abuse occurs at the hands of religious leaders. So, things are not a "cut and dry" as you imagine them to be.

Also, if you would bother to go read that particular bill, you would know that it is in support of homeschooling AND the pupils of the home school.

But, hey, always assume the worse in people. It is what Jesus would do, right?

It absolutely could put them ahead of their peers — ever watch a kid playing Minecraft? They need to be able to read, do math, figure out co-ordinates, understand area and depth. Also teaches consequences of poor planning and impulsive behavior. Look at Lego, Reading Rainbow, How-To videos, so much out there now for learning without regimented books and “proscribed” studies. Just getting out in the backyard, shopping, volunteering, visiting a museum or craft fair teaches loads more to an interested child.

I worked in a school system for several years and I know how it works; for some kids it was wonderful, they thrived and were successful (often teacher’s pets) — but others were ignored, way behind in lessons & lost but socially promoted, and worse. Not to mention the artificial and unrealistic “socialization”, bullying and “prison rules”.

And I haven’t missed the point of the bill at all. I was answering your question & explaining how similar requirements work (don’t work) in my state.

OK, I'll add your information to my mental meat grinder. There is no easy answer. Perhaps it takes a full-spectrum solution, whatever that might be.

It is necessary to have a minimally educated citizenry in order to have elections that are helpful. We don't seem to be there at this point in time; but, we once were. The "social engineering" is at the heart of our current failings. Whatever takes our Nation back to truthful and factual education without political bias and sexual exploitation is something I'll get behind.

Thank you for your thoughtful retorts.

Government is not responsible for our education, or our children’s education. So a bill that enables Government to protect children from their parents is a good idea? Parents who have taken the initiative to educate their children at their own expense? 9 words: “we’re from the government we are here to help.”

Government is not responsible for our education, or our children’s education.

When you have a "Government of the people, by the people, and for the people", YOU are that government. In order for our government to survive, its citizens must be able to vote wisely. That takes an educated population. So, as a co-owner of my Nation, it is prudent for me to take an active interest in the education of all.

Citizenship is not supposed to be selfish. It is necessary to exercise some responsibility toward our fellows and for the common good. Besides, a better educated citizenry generally is a more self-supporting society.

People who are dependent upon the tax payer are generally that way because the educational system has failed. The only real way to reduce government dependency is to fix the faults in education. Many people do not seek an education, rather they resist it. Their children, and consequently our Nation, can be saved through force of law if necessary.
