Turkish lira, stock market crash after Istanbul mayor and Erdogan rival arrested

The Turkish lira fell to a record low against the dollar and the country's benchmark stock index dropped by as much as 7% following the surprise arrest of Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu — a rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and leading opposition party figure — on charges he denies.

The lira was trading as low as 40.96 to the U.S. dollar, according to Refinitiv data, before moving to 38.74 by 12:47 p.m. in Istanbul, with the greenback up 5.53% on the long-embattled Turkish currency. The BIST 100 stock index had pared losses after being down as much as 7% earlier in the morning.

Imamoglu, who won the mayorship of Turkey's most populous city in April of 2023, was arrested on charges including terrorism and organized crime, according to state media outlet Anadolu, which cited the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. The news agency reported that prosecutors also issued warrants for 100 other people in Imamoglu's political party.

The popular 53-year-old mayor was seen as the next opposition party candidate for the Turkish presidency. Imamoglu's Republican People's Party (CHP), Turkey's main opposition party, was set to hold a primary election on March 23, during which Imamoglu was widely expected to emerge as the group's presidential candidate.

In a statement, the CHP flatly rejected the charges against Imamoglu, calling the move a coup.

Should we care? Look at what happened after Kadafy and Assad. Anything good come out of it?

Then there’s Saddam.

Erdogan following Putin’s example. Arrest and imprison any possible rivals.

Sometimes a rival will have a mysterious fall off a high-rise balcony. All sorts of people fall to their deaths in Russia.

In the 90s, my Mom and stepdad took a Mediterranean cruise that included a couple of days in Istanbul. One of the souvenirs they brought back was a- no kidding- a Turkish million-lira note! Pretty cool!

Turkey showing Democrats how you deal with political enemies.
Now they’re wishfully thinking they should have done the same to Donald Trump.

RE: Turkish million lira note

Keep it and have it appraised regularly. It could be worth a lot in future as a souvenir item.

Erdogan is pure Evil.

The mayor of Istanbul was the opponent running on the CHP (Kemalists) party against Erdogan, until approaching the cut off. They arrested the Mayor and accused him of embezzling 7 Million dollars.

Erdogan sheltered ISIS inside Turkey and in Syria close to Turkish border for years.

Now they are trying to convince the world that the new (un-elected) President of Syria is moderate and reasonable. Instead he is a puppet of Erdogan. They are fooling nobody.

Riots and demonstrations in Istanbul have forced Curfew's and rumor has it that Erdogan is not at the palace, but hiding somewhere else. And that he has called for Turkish soldiers running the Syria takeover to come back to Turkey to put down the rebellion.

If CHP comes to power, it will be a huge improvement.

Turkey has the world’s worst economy. That position was once held by Argentina but the new President is reversing the order of things.

Next in line is worseness is Russia. Russia has the third worst economy.
