Romania, a country on Europe’s eastern fringe, is perhaps a surprising focus of attention for a new US administration whose foreign policy priorities include ending the war in Ukraine, reshaping the Middle East and expanding American territory.
Accustomed to flying under the radar, many in the country have been stunned by the Trump administration’s interest in its politics, which rarely garners international attention.
“It’s been unprecedented,” said Oana Popescu-Zamfir, director of the GlobalFocus Center, a think-tank in the capital, Bucharest. She said she cannot recall a time in Romania’s post-Soviet history that its affairs have been so closely scrutinized from afar.
The attention has centered on Calin Georgescu, a Kremlin-friendly ultranationalist candidate in Romania’s abruptly aborted presidential election last year, and Andrew Tate, a “manosphere” celebrity charged with rape and human trafficking by Romanian authorities, allegations that he denies.
The two men have little in common, but their claims to have both been subjected to a “witch hunt” by corrupt liberal institutions – à la President Donald Trump – have helped turn them into cause célèbres in conservative American circles and made an enemy of the Romanian state.
In Georgescu, the online right sees a politician with unorthodox views being denied an election victory on flimsy claims of “foreign interference.” In Tate, it sees an influential man facing trumped-up charges to cut him down. And in Romania, it sees the grossest case of what JD Vance called Europe’s “threat from within.”

LMAQ,
CNN has become a Freeper.
The political faction in the US which obsessed over “Our Democracy” was greatly relieved when outside forces managed to remove the most popular candidate in the Romanian election. Don’t let the people vote for him! He’s too popular!
And this same political faction in the US seems confused as to why the “online right” in the US is interested in bogus elections where the guy who seemed quite likely to win ends up getting cheated out of victory. Why would the “online right” care about that??
Why should we care? It’s just another CIA USAID coup for the NWO. Has NOTHING to do with the good of the USA, absolutely nothing at all. Just our hard earned money for nefarious purposes and the enrichment of TRAITOR THIEVES.
We aren’t “obsessed” - it just happens to be the latest example of blatant suppression of democracy by European autocrats. And it’s not a “low profile” country except in the sense that the Western elites tend to ignore it because it’s not one of their elite locales like Paris or Monaco or the Riviera. It’s a fairly large European nation and CNN’s handlers are just upset that people are taking notice of their shenanigans.
Yeah if the WEF and the EU can throw populists candidates under the bus for whatever reason and not embracing globalism, the outlook for Europe has become dark indeed.
Classic example of an Opinion Piece masquerading as actual news.
Typically CNN is projecting it's own obsessions. And it's destructive behavior since CNN pays people fortunes of money to talk about their obsession with the obsessions of the so-called right. And it's worse for them because the object of their obsession is on-line with them right now and any time they go online to check on what the online right is up to. They are everywhere they go.
Is it the country where Fred Flinstone’s look alike is king?
Ukraine used to be a “low profile country” too.
What an arrogant and condescending headline and article.
“Online right”
Sounds kinda terrifying.
:-)
See my tagline.
“ Accustomed to flying under the radar, many in the country have been stunned by the Trump administration’s interest in its politics, which rarely garners international attention.”
Let me guess. CNN doesn’t know Romania is a NATO member, and is building a huge base for it. It also sounds like CNN doesn’t know how the EU interfered in a presidential election there. Five minutes on the internet and they could have written a truthful article, but I guess that wasn’t their intention anyway.
Apparently, being concerned about an election being overturned by a court and the incarceration of the winner of the election is being “obsessed.”
More like, “When the EU’s last fig-leaf of democracy goes”.
