"When Nate heard his cousin, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, attack Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House’s Oval Office, he flew into a rage. In his camper van, lost on the roads of the American West that he has been crisscrossing since he came back from Ukraine in January 2025, Nate was disappointed. He felt let down by his younger cousin — JD is a few years younger than Nate, who is 47 — whose integrity he had always defended.
“JD is a good guy, intelligent,” Nate says. “When he criticized aid to Ukraine, I told myself that it was because he had to please a certain electorate and that it was a political game. But what they did to Zelensky [with Donald Trump, Editor’s note] was an ambush of absolute bad faith.”
Nate and JD share grandparents: JD’s mother, Beverly, is the sister of Nate’s father, James. The two men spent vacations together with JD’s family in Middletown, Ohio, or in California, where Nate’s family briefly lived.

"There's a certain level of decorum that I expect from political leaders, especially in front of cameras," Nate Vance - who spent three years volunteering with the Ukrainian military after Russia's full-scale invasion - told the BBC.
It follows his earlier comment that Trump and Vance were acting like "useful idiots" for President Vladimir Putin in their handling of the conflict.
Nate Vance said that he did not agree that Zelensky had failed to show appreciation. "Zelensky does a daily or nightly address and thanks everyone who supports Ukraine on a daily basis," he said.
He said that perhaps the Ukrainian leader had not shown "enough deference to Donald Trump" but that it would be "odd for my cousin and Donald Trump to ask for deference because they've been actively working against his initiatives for the past three years".
If Nate Vance wants to run for congress on a pro-Zelenskyy platform, he’s welcome to do that. Until he gets elected to something where his opinion on Ukrainian politics is relevant, who gives a sh-t what he thinks?
He has years of on-the-spot experience fighting with Ukrainian forces. I would think he has something instructive to say.
Well my question is: most volunteers who went to the Ukraine left or died early once they found out they were being used as political tools and cannon fodder, what made this guy so special?
Kursk kessel seems to have evaporated days ago. The Ukes withdrew, largely successfully it seems.
My impression is there has been a steady flow of volunteers in and out.
This guy? Tougher than most probably.
Another devil’s advocate individual taking the benefit of the doubt position.
It’s going to be a shame that he has to get flattened with the corrupted “country” of Ukraine.
They need to make it quick so there isn’t too much suffering.
Seems like a tough guy. Even Vance says so. It may take some doing. Like Ukraine really, a country of tough guys.
That’s kinda like someone in 1943 saying, “How to deal with Tojo? I dunno. Let’s hear what the kamikaze pilots have to say about the guy.”
Ask the kamikaze pilots? They were on Tojo’s side.
You may well ask US Marine officers who have had to clean up nests of suicidal Japanese defenders. And what did they do? They asked them (the Marines). And they took their experience into account, making it clear that a conventional invasion would be extremely costly. That’s one reason the A bombs were cleared for use.
