Why Putin will seek to sink Trump’s Ukraine ceasefire plan Former Kremlin diplomat trashes idea that Russian leader will sign up to U.S.-brokered truce in Ukraine.

Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin is highly unlikely to embrace a United States-brokered ceasefire proposal that Ukraine has already endorsed, a former Russian diplomat warned Thursday.

The Russian leader won’t see it as in his interest to accept and he will seek to bog down discussions by raising a never-ending series of modifications in order to sink it, said Boris Bondarev, who worked for the Russian permanent mission to the United Nations Office in Geneva until he resigned in opposition to Putin’s war on Ukraine.

“Putin has no interest in a ceasefire,” Bondarev told POLITICO. “He thinks he can achieve his goals through fighting. I think he feels quite confident.”

The former Russian diplomat was speaking as U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow for discussions on the proposed 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine — a truce the White House hopes will pave the way to a larger and comprehensive peace settlement to end Russia’s three-year-old full-scale invasion of its neighbor.

Kremlin officials have already cast doubt on the proposal. A Putin foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov — who participated last month in a meeting with U.S. negotiators in Saudi Arabia — described the proposed ceasefire as “a hasty document.”

...For Putin a temporary ceasefire risks turning into a longer truce, Bondarev said, and “in PR terms it will be more difficult to break a ceasefire than to decline one.

Politico is not a credible source.

They have gone from Ukraine has beaten Russia, to Zelensky was set up by Trump to Russia will never accept peace to Russia will sink the ceasefire.

They have been wrong on every single position they take, like a good liberal rag.

USAID money doesn’t buy the quality propaganda it use to.

There are more ways to bring Putin to the table other than arms.

A gentleman cited as Russian turns out not so much these days --- "Boris Bondarev, a former member of Russia's delegation to the United Nations in Geneva, now lives modestly in Switzerland with his wife and their kitten — and spends a lot of time on Twitter."

One observes that Politico didn't mention that.

When Putin rejects Trump’s ceasefire, then Trump can tell all of the idiots who think Putin’s a nice KGB man, “Well, I tried to end the war, but Putin won’t agree to the cease fire.” Anyone who’s watched the situation knows this, but Trump will get cover to supply Ukraine with more arms.

Wishful thinking by Politico who is rooting for Trump’s ceasefire efforts to fail. Putin is on the cusp of taking Kursk. It would make sense he would delay this until he has the territorial advantage of having all of Kursk before he talks peace terms. I would think he would delay a cease fire discussion to allow him a few more days to clean up his taking over Kursk.

Russia has zero intentions on taking all of Ukraine. Even when they had the chance in the past, they didn’t.

Occupying places where the locals hate you and there is massive resistance is a long term economic, military, and intel service drain.

Everyone knew what the Russians will shoot for, the ethnic Russian areas. The rest of this talk about Russia wanting to take all of Ukraine, invade the Baltic states, or Poland etc. is all Western “propaganda” intended to scare you into supporting this nonsensical war.

Look at a map of those areas that are ethnic Russian, and then look at a map of what Russia has taken, not a coincidence.

You’re a bit slow, aren’t you?

Boris Bondarev was all over the world press when he resigned, and his outspoken comments went viral. It’s no secret that he waited for his wife and cat to get out of Moscow before seeking asylum in Switzerland.

https://unwatch.org/exclusive-senior-russian-diplomat-at-u-n-defects/

It’s also no secret that Bondarev was only one of 30 senior diplomats who resigned in protest at their own government not just invading Ukraine, but for derailing the peace deal that was inches away from being signed.

Boris Johnson gets blamed for the deal collapsing, but according to Russia’s own negotiators, and Bondarev, the Kremlin insisted on them moving the goalposts at the last minute - to demanded Zelensky and the US agree to remove ALL NATO training and protection from ex-Warsaw Pact countries that joined the NATO alliance after 1996, repeating the implicit demand within ultimatum sent to NATO in December 2021.

Since there is no mechanism for NATO to kick countries out of the alliance, even by qualified majority vote, the demand cannot be satisfied. The USA knows it, Putin knows it. And, there’s only one thing more retarded than asking the USA to deliver the palpably impossible - it’s asking a president of a country that’s a NATO partner but not a member to deliver the same thing.

Boris said “you can’t agree to that” because Ukraine cannot force NATO to kick a country out of the alliance, any more than the USA can - or Russia.

Classic Russian negotiation in the press. Trump learned it from them.

That said, there are still plenty of areas that Russia could go for. Ukraine is a very large country.

The Russians at this point not only have the initiative, they have a decisive advantage and could shoot ahead faster than they are. They are doing a “slow creep” to keep the pressure on.

Russia is going to expell the Ukraine from the last 100 square kilometers of Kursk, that’s all that remains from the 1,500 square kilometers taken by Ukraine at their apogee. Simultaneously, Russia will keep creeping forward gobbling more and more of Ukraine up until they come to their senses and realize that the longer this goes on, the bigger of a loser they will be (keep the pressure on).

True.

The point is that Russia isn’t going for the areas in Ukraine that are nationalist. That would be a long term nightmare. Just like the went for Crimea in 14, today they are going for areas that are majority ethnic Russian. Less of a long term struggle like that.

Most folks with any sort of a clue knew this as soon as the invasion started, but that didn’t stop our western non-propagandist and factual media from propagating “Red Dawn” like narratives. Complete junk. The Russians didn’t have the resources to pull anything off like that, not even a 1% chance. They are struggling with Ukraine and it requires a partial national mobilization for that alone.

It’s funny how on the one had we claim the Ukraine is kicking the Russians ass, how the Russians are a bunch of stumble bums. But on the other hand our media tries to tell us to be scared because tomorrow they are going to come through the Fulda gap.

A cease fire? Laughable.

“ Reasons why Russia to refuse a ceasefire (and especially anything deemed temporary):

1. A ceasefire would be exploited by the West and Ukraine to halt the advance of the Russian army, strip it of its initiative, supply the Ukrainian army with more weapons, continue extensive mobilization in Ukraine, and strengthen the repressive and anti-Russian nature of the Ukrainian political regime

2. The experience of the Minsk 1 and Minsk 2 agreements clearly demonstrates this pattern

3. The consistent dishonesty of Western politicians and media regarding the conflict, as well as their refusal to acknowledge their own and Ukraine’s culpability, strongly suggests that history will repeat itself

4. Russian President Vladimir Putin and other Russian officials have repeatedly stated that what Russia needs is lasting peace, not just a temporary ceasefire

5. The West cannot really be trusted

6. Russia is advancing. A ceasefire always benefits those who are retreating.”

The West simply can no longer be trusted, especially the EU.

#1 and #6 are enough.
Putin would be foolish to allow Ukraine to call timeout at this point
