Government shutdown likely after Schumer says Senate Dems will block GOP funding bill

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Wednesday that most Democrats in the upper chamber will not support a House Republican-passed bill to fund the federal government through the end of September, all but ensuring a partial shutdown beginning at 11:59 p.m. Friday.

“Funding the government should be a bipartisan effort, but Republicans chose a partisan path, drafting their [continuing resolution] without any input — any input — from congressional Democrats,” Schumer (D-NY) said on the Senate floor Wednesday.

“Because of that, Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House CR. Our caucus is unified on a clean [CR through April 11] that will keep the government open and give Congress time to negotiate bipartisan legislation that can pass.”

I will personally contribute to DOGE if needed, so they can continue their work, and have everything charted, graphed and investigated for when Fed.gov re-opens.

Exactly—close down a whole bunch of agencies—lock everybody out of the buildings—and then never let them back in....

We can do this!

If it shuts down Trump MUST make it plain he will NOT allow the gov workers who will be sent home to be paid for the duration, it’s on their dime! Never relent from this! no pay for no work.

Also he should NOT allow it to restart in it’s current bloated state.

The Senate could theoretically invoke the “nuclear option” to lower the vote threshold for passing a continuing resolution (CR) bill. The nuclear option allows the Senate to change its rules by a simple majority vote (51 votes) rather than the usual 60-vote threshold for most legislation.

However, using the nuclear option for a CR would be highly controversial. It has been used in the past to eliminate the filibuster for judicial and executive branch nominations, and later for Supreme Court justices. But changing the filibuster rules for regular legislation, such as a CR, would be a major escalation and could set a precedent that would fundamentally alter how the Senate operates.

Right now, with a divided Senate and upcoming elections, it’s unlikely that either party would take such a drastic step unless they believe the political stakes justify it.

Can’t the prez just declare everything he wants to fund “essential” and let the rest of it be shut down, unfunded, until a budget is passed?

Shut the courts down and get search warrants for all their offices. Then lock them all out for good.
