The railroad tracks that slice through downtown Freehold, N.J., used to be lined by dozens of men, waiting for work. Each morning, the men — day laborers, almost all from Latin America and undocumented — would be scooped up by local contractors in pickup trucks for jobs painting, landscaping, removing debris.
In recent weeks, the tracks have been desolate. On a gray February morning, a laborer named Mario, who came from Mexico two decades ago, said it was the quietest he could remember.
“Because of the president, we have a fear,” said Mario, 55, who agreed to be interviewed on the condition that only his first name would be used because he is undocumented. His two sons are also in the United States illegally; one works in paving, the other in home construction. “We are in difficult times,” he said.
This scene has been playing out on the streets of Freehold, on the farms of California’s Central Valley, in nursing homes in Arizona, in Georgia poultry plants and in Chicago restaurants.
President Trump has broadcast plans for a “mass deportation,” and the opening weeks of his second term have brought immigration enforcement operations in cities across the United States, providing a daily drumbeat of arrests that, while so far relatively limited, are quickly noted in group chats among migrants.
Fear has gripped America’s undocumented workers. Many are staying home.
The impact is being felt not only in immigrant homes and communities, but also in the industries that rely on immigrants as a source of willing and inexpensive labor, including residential construction, agriculture, senior care and hospitality. American consumers will soon feel the pain.
“Businesses across industries know what comes next when their work force disappears — restaurants, coffee shops and grocery stores struggling to stay open, food prices soaring, and...

Ya think?
It was only Trump’s #1 promise.
Good. They should leave. Save Homan and company from doing the deporting.
The Birdcage Liner of Record whines again.
The core of Reagan's "One-Time-Only-Amnesty' was employers were required to ask potential employees to provide proof of citizenship and employers who hired illegal aliens would be prosecuted.
Had this been applied from the beginning we wouldn't have an illegal alien problem.
hopefully they didn’t just create new pick up points, but are actually leaving. I cannot see those employers giving up so quick on cheap labor.
If they are undocumented then it is just a matter of getting any required paperwork in order that shows their temporary legal status. If they are illegal entrants they would not be able to get such paperwork and therefore are candidates for deportation.
I’m not seeing the problem. Those involved in illegal activities should be uncomfortable.
When dealing with the left extreme diligence and attention to detail is required.
If they can find a way to cheat they will.
This is yet another example of how the Left has perverted the language. They talk about “undocumented” workers as if they somehow lost their documents.
Or perhaps they applied for them, but the papers got lost in the mail.
Get out of our country, Mario. You don’t belong here.
Then obviously they must be deported ASAP!
Well, Mario, you are NOT victims! You voluntarily broke our laws, and likely have taken much from us Citizens in the way of services and benefits.
Please exit this fine Country immediately, pay back all the things that you've taken, and a little gratitude wouldn't hurt.
For the left bank robberies are undocumented bank account withdrawals.
This is another example of news sources (AKA Leftist allies) helping the Left control the language.
What a load of breakfast tacos. They’ve gone from picking strawberries to “senior care”. ROTFL! Well at least they don’t have to slave away for low wages in the hot sun. They can now slave away emptying bed pans of Americans for low wages in air-conditioned buildings. And if they go home, Americans are going to suffer. Well, you know what they say, a little suffering is good for the soul. Americans need to empty their own bed pans for a while.
The illegal invader mass media coverup has a specific start date—2013.
That is when the Associated Press style book banned the use of the phrase “illegal alien”.
All “journalists” were immediately declared outcasts if they used that phrase.
I’m betting that if the NYT hires any, they’re janitorial - that escapes them.
Somewhat off-topic, I wonder who the whole “chill” thing resonates with. I remember Hillary trying to use it. I don’t think it works outside of NYC or other Liberal enclaves in New England.
I took special care to only hire legal citizens under penalty of law for not doing that. So should everyone else.
It is time for a change and a big one and it will be painful because those that let this mess get out of hand did so. It is NOT because the law is being enforced; It is painful because people did not follow the law and it was not enforced.
Another whine piece from the printing presses of Mexico’s favorite billionaire, Carlos Slim and the writers of the NYSlimes. Slim makes a good case for selective enforcement of freedom of the press. The gray lady, not deserving of that title any more, now just a one woman hit job on America.
