The U.S. Forest Service manages 78% of the land in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Yet, a hiring freeze on seasonal workers and recent firings of key staff have gutted an already-stretched-thin agency, putting on hold critical work in water quality, environmental restoration and forest fuels reduction projects while also diminishing the forest service’s capacity to manage the millions of visitors who come to Lake Tahoe every year — especially on the Fourth of July.
Eleven people who work at the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit lost their jobs last month in the so-called “Valentine’s Day Massacre” led by Elon Musk’s U.S. Department of Government Efficiency, according to former employees. The job losses compound chronically low staffing, plus a hiring freeze on seasonal workers that went into effect last fall. In all, the management unit has lost a third of its recreational staff, including the lone permanent wilderness ranger position in Desolation Wilderness.
The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is the smallest forest in California, but it sees more visitors than any of the state’s national parks. The management unit’s 156,335 acres are a fifth the size of Yosemite National Park, yet data shows the management unit welcomes almost twice as many visitors as Yosemite. But the forest service has gone dark in communications about how Lake Tahoe will be impacted by the Donald Trump administration’s mass firing of forest service employees last month.
The Trump administration has frozen funding for partner nonprofits the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has traditionally relied on to lend extra hands and support critical work, such as fuels reduction projects that buffer Tahoe’s forest-dense neighborhoods from wildfire risk.

Time to sell off half of it.
And just how do you manage visitors?? I’m quite capable of finding my way using a simple trail map and staying with at least one other person.
Someone has to man the ranger station and keep bears from stealing picnic baskets.

South Lake Tahoe residents need affordable housing facts, not propaganda
Kelly Bessem, who complained "there is literally no one."
Exactly! The Feds own too much of the Western US...give it back to the states.
Here we go with all the sob stories.
Just this morning my local cbs news affiliate had a story about upcoming NASA rocket launches “in spite of recent layoffs”.
TOO DAMNED BAD

I think I found the problem, professor.
We should privatize the whole Federal Park system. Sell it to new settlers. Let's import Boer South Africans who are constantly threatened with slaughter to settle these lands and produce crops and livestock. A million or two hard-working Christian farmers, used to hardship, would definitely add to America.
$6.75 Trillion in spending a year, and all we hear is how “stretched thin” Fed.gov is.

rats sticking up for other rats. I think Lake Tahoe will be just fine without an army of overpaid Democrats with fancy uniforms standing around.
If the parks service ranger isn’t in the woods, does he make a noise? Apparently yes, only in the media.
It mentions that some employees working on fuels reduction were fired, but it doesn’t provide details on whether replacement staffing, funding reallocations, or other mitigation efforts are in place.
It’s quite possible that despite the job cuts, fire prevention efforts will continue through remaining staff, contractors, or alternative funding sources. Without more data from the Forest Service or other sources, the claim that wildfire defenses are severely compromised is just pearl clutching.
While nature sends lightening...man neglects clearing. Time for CCC camps. All those little environmentalists need to find out what a work ethic is about.
Ditto!
Bingo! You nailed it. The Government doesn’t need to own all this land.
Why do you need someone?? It’s a park...march on..enjoy the view. You have a cell phone....stay in touch.
Why do I think millionaires with vacation cottages are terrified of the Fedarsonists,”burn and build back better” land use projects? Only being a billionaire spares you these days from the leftists plans.
Sounds like it's time to move some rangers around.
Boo-crap-hoo.
