Advocates claim Puerto Rican independence could save $617.8 billion in U.S. federal spending, sparking renewed debates about its political status.
In November 2024, a non-binding referendum showed 55% support for statehood and 45% for independence or free association.
The Trump administration has not yet responded to independence proposals, with discourse fueled by significant political and economic complexities.
As of March 7, 2025, a growing movement is urging President Trump to seriously consider supporting Puerto Rican independence. Advocates claim this change could save American taxpayers a dramatic $617.8 billion. The discussion surrounding Puerto Rico’s political future is not new but has gained fresh momentum due to shifting leadership in Puerto Rico, past federal funding efforts, and ongoing financial challenges. This debate also highlights broader questions about the U.S. relationship with its territories and the costs and responsibilities involved in maintaining them.

Today I doubt they will agree to end the gravy train.
Many PR have served in the US military and they do have a VA hospital there, we would still have to maintain that anyway.
Puerto Rico’s independence was propagandized by Radio Havana in my childhood.
Terrorists supporting that cause tried to kill President Harry Truman and attacked the House of Representatives heck they opened fire from the gallery into the chamber back in the 1950’s.
I think it’s time they become independent.
Bingo! An American $hithole.
Samoa is independent. American Samoa is a us territory. A ferry from one to the other. It would be appropriate for the Americans to give it up but they won’t accept it. Chicoms would be hovering around-belt and road.
Hawaii-keep it but restore the monarchy. Remove statehood. Native Hawaiians get the power.
And, that the new proprietors would be from a country that's not friendly to the US.
Every jailed Puerto Rican could be dumped there in their ‘home’.
This is so obvious: Give it to Denmark.
PR can be its own country. No more US territory.
Puerto Rico used to have an independence movement.
They shot up the Capitol in 1954.
Would Denmark trade PR for Greenland?
Fair trade. It's a tropical paradise for the Danes.
Are there VA hospitals in foreign countries? That’s what PR would be if it became independent.
Would Puerto Ricans maintain their U.S. citizenship?
It’s the sensible thing to do. Puerto Rico has there own culture and there own language. They should be independent. I wish them well. But this weird hybrid arrangement that currently exists doesn’t make sense. Whether or not independence would be a smart move, politically, is another matter.
Over 600B. That is a LOT of gravy.
Many PR were drafted back during the time I served. They would be entitled for VA Care.
And, unlike Hawaii and some of our other Pacific Island territories, Puerto Rico has no strategic value for us.
We can get rid of AOC so she can be their president. Win-Win!
Maybe Spain wants to buy it back from us? If not, they can have it for free.
