THE NEWS from Washington reached Ukraine in real time. In all corners of the country—in offices and trenches, cafes and factories—people watched President Donald Trump and Vice-President J.D. Vance attack Volodymyr Zelensky, with claims that he had been “disrespectful”. On the front lines, amid artillery duels and explosions, those who could turned to messaging apps to express their anguish at the deliberate humiliation of their president. “Andriy”, an officer in a secret unit with access to the chats, says Mr Zelensky’s rating has been boosted among soldiers. “I don’t remember the last time someone said, this is over, time to pack up. On the contrary, everyone is saying Sanych [a nickname for Mr Zelensky] has done well.”
Yet the disaster in the Oval office has also raised fears that America might now move to choke off support for Ukraine, and questions about whether Europe could ever compensate. Among Ukraine’s stunned elite there is a growing debate about whether Mr Zelensky is still the right person to lead the country. According to one former diplomat, “Zelensky’s demise is now inevitable...because he is inconveniently stubborn and basically got hated by both Trump and Putin. They both need someone submissive in Ukraine.”
Mr Zelensky has now landed in Britain and is due to meet Sir Keir Starmer, the prime minister, on the afternoon of March 1st. The day after both will attend a summit with European leaders in London. Those leaders have made public statements backing Mr Zelensky. But the meeting will illuminate how much credibility Mr Zelensky really has left and whether Europe has the resolve to attempt to militarily support Ukraine without full American backing. Ukraine’s hero is in danger of becoming a tragic figure.

But does Europe have the backbone to militarily support Ukraine without our backing?
IMHO, President Trump should walk away from Ukraine. It's a never ending war, a black hole sucking up more and more people and resources.
If European leaders support Zelensky as much as they claim, they can deal with him.
Zelensky is unsustainable if he actually cut a deal with Russia the Nazi diehards (Ukrainian Nationalists) would overthrow him.
Putin is in the same boat with his people. He makes a deal, he won’t live to see the sunrise.
Time for the US to withdraw from NATO.
NATO can welcome Ukraine.
Europe can reset to 1913.
You got a blind spot there Buddy!
BTTT
Zelensky is going to run out of men to fight his war. At that point, if Europe supplies the bodies, they too become targets. At that point, Article V becomes operant and we have WWIII anyway. Trump is definitely engaging in brinksmanship in that respect.
The problem with that is i doubt Poland, Finland or the Baltic nations desire a return of the warm embrace of Mother Russia.
no Zelensky? no Ukraine? no Europe? Where do I sign up?
“””people watched President Donald Trump and Vice-President J.D. Vance attack Volodymyr Zelensky,”””
and
“””But the meeting will illuminate how much credibility Mr Zelensky really has left and whether Europe has the resolve to attempt to militarily support Ukraine without full American backing.”””
It looks like it is ‘put up or shut up’ time for the Europeans.
I noticed the Economist used the word ‘attack’ to describe yesterday’s event.
Well, Europe you can attack our President all you want, but just maybe it will be your sons and daughters losing their lives on the battlefield if USA backs away from financially supporting Europe as it has done for the last 80 years.
But does Europe have the backbone to militarily support Ukraine without our backing?
The Ukes and the Russkies have hated each other for centuries; let them fight it out.
If Zelenskyy would’ve gone along to get along, things might be different.
F the Economist … what a pathetic article.
If NATO chooses of voluntary war, there is no reason for America to join in. Europe can fight World War III on its own.
Hint to Ukrainians: a future without Zelenskyy is a future with America.
Yyyeahhh. I don’t know. Did the cut-and-paster from The Economist actually talk to “Andriy”?
Hey, I’ve just figured out the answer to all the world’s problems. Have the EU send all their “immigrants” to fight Russia in Ukraine.
“Zelensky is going to run out of men to fight his war. At that point, if Europe supplies the bodies, they too become targets. At that point, Article V becomes operant and we have WWIII anyway. Trump is definitely engaging in brinksmanship in that respect.”
NATO treaties obligate the US to defend member states from invasion, but I don’t believe we are required to support foreign adventures.
Europe has nothing but words when it needs bullets and soldiers. Enough of America playing the fool for NATO. Z wants to call the shots, fine. Let’s see how far he gets with that.
