**I always thought that Rose should have apologized and gone the “I have a disease” route, but he kept fighting against the obvious and left little room for a way out.**
He’s transracial, a la transgender. He grew up in Cincinatti which is really the south. Grew up around blacks so he’s one of them. Did OJ admit what he did? Did BJ acknowledge his wrongful use of cigars? He’s another.
Unfortunately today’s boys get into gaming way too early. When I was growing up as soon as the snow came off the streets we’d have a game of catch in front of the house, and if the third person play up we’d play running bases.
Rose considered himself above the rules. He gambled on the game, including games his team were playing in, got caught red handed, and the lied about it for the next 20 years before finally admitting the truth. He was and is an arrogant self centered ass who also happened to be a great singles hitter. But he does not belong in The Hall because disrespected the game and all who play it.
His name is in the record books. But it does not belong on The Hall of Fame. He does not deserve that honor.
A number of years ago, sentiment among the Baseball Writers seemed to swing in favor of Rose in the HOF. Then came the news of Rose’ legal problems connected with an underage girl. That ended the attempt at Rose rehabilitation by the BBWAA.
I gave up all “Pro Sports” 30yrs ago.
He was banned for life. He didn’t belong in the Hall until he was gone. Now he’s gone sure put him in. But he broke the BIG RULE, the rule posted NEXT TO THE PHONE WHERE HE BROKE IT. And he never repented. He didn’t deserve to celebrate getting into the Hall.
He SAID he never bet against his team.
Of course he also said he never gambled, then admitted that was a lie.
Then he said he never bet on baseball, then admitted that was a lie.
Then he said he never bet on games involving his team, then admitted that was a lie.
3 strikes. I don’t believe for a second he never bet against his team. I wouldn’t believe him if he said the sun rose in the East. He broke the 1 rule in North American sports that gets you banned for life the first time.
Of course he’s dead now. They should put him in the Hall. But do it quietly. No ceremony. No speeches. Just give him a display, and include the report. Every single word of it.
> was Pete Rose lying when he said he never bet against his team <
I don’t know. But here’s the thing. At first Rose said he didn’t bet on baseball at all, period. And he continued that lie for quite some time, even as the evidence mounted against him.
So as I see it, his credibility is shot. It would be reasonable to believe nothing that he said about this matter.
You know, I was thinking of OJ last night when I was making that reply. I didn’t want to equate Rose the gambler with OJ the murderer, but there are eerie parallels especially in how both played the I’m denying I did what you said but I’m hinting I did what you said game and stayed in the spotlight. Both were legendary players in their sport and they seemed to want to come out on top no matter what even when it was to deny wrongdoing and in OJ’s case, heinous wrongdoing.
Integrity? What integrity? Forget the Chicago Black Sox. Forget the Steroid Era. All professional sports now have legalized gambling.
The issue wasn’t that Rose was fixing games. The issue was that Rose’s fixes could conflict with organized crime’s fixes. Can’t have that.
Can’t be long until the Baseball Hall of Fame will actually be fully sponsored by DraftKing SportsBook, BetMGM or Caesars SportsBook. After that happens Charlie Hustle will be totally acceptable.
“Integrity? What integrity? Forget the Chicago Black Sox. Forget the Steroid Era. All professional sports now have legalized gambling.”

Your comment has no bearing on the discussion. None. If you or I or anyone not connected with major league sports bets on the game, it has no bearing on the outcome.
Pete Rose bet on his own team that he managed. Even if it was to win, that meant he may have let pitchers stay in too long, or making other moves to the long-term detriment of his team in order to win the game he bet on.
Pete Rose in the HOF? NEVER, under ANY circumstances.
NEVER.
Very naive. If enough people placed bets that would cause someone connected to lose money, an athlete's or coach's phone would ring and the game would be thrown the other way or points would be shaved.
Two YouTube shorts with Michael Franzese explaining how it's done.

If Pete gets in, SO SHOULD Shoeless Joe Jackson. He is no less guilty than Rose was. Rose was a manager betting on the games he was involved with. Shoeless Joe at least hit over .360 in the series he was suppose to blow. Not hardly. He would have hit .196 and just said he had a bad series. Nope, seems the guy was trying.
