White House official: If Zelenskiy says minerals deal isn't finalized, invitation to meet Trump may not make sense

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A White House official on Wednesday raised doubts about whether an invitation to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to meet U.S. President Donald Trump would make sense given Zelenskiy's comments that a minerals deal is not complete.

"If the Ukrainian leader says the deal isn’t finalized, I don’t see why an invitation would make sense," the official told Reuters. "There’s an expectation that his coming is to recognize a final position (on the minerals deal) and he is not at a final position in his own words in this new wording."

The official said Zelenskiy's latest comments from Kyiv suggest the minerals deal is not completed.

Zelenskiy said on Wednesday that he had reached a "preliminary" deal with the U.S. on minerals.

A large chunk of the minerals are in the Russian held bits of Ukraine

I don’t trust Zelensky. Trump should just cut off weapons. It’ll take a little longer but the war will end.

Don’t think he wants to play games with Trump.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see DJT cancel the visit sometime later today.

The whole topic was manufactured by pro Ukraine factions inside the US intelligence community.

No one has published a geological survey to make sense of any of this. Various maps get splashed in media because they’re part of that faction trying to push war.

Those maps never have a name attached to them of a geologist at USGS. Frankly, the only geologists who would have been involved in any such thing would be those from Gazprom and Rosneft. They had unfettered access for decades. They know more about the geology there than anyone else. They did not leap to produce anything.

The highest probability scenario is that there is nothing there.

This whole matter was a reaction of desperation to the clear inclination on the part of Trump to end all US involvement there. Someone thought that they had read Trump’s mind and he could be swayed to become involved if he thought that it would provide assets to the US. The whole thing is a manufactured story.

The highest probability scenario is that there is nothing there.

Should we believe that Trump would make a mineral rights deal without doing geological research/due diligence? If Trump is willing to make a deal knowing there is no "worthwhile" amount of minerals - what then is he hoping to achieve?

Zelensky is NOT a legitimate President. His term expired last year. How can anyone negotiate with an illegitimate “ President” ?

Hold elections and make the minerals deal with an elected President.

The greasy little man in green has said in the past two weeks, he will hold elections, then no, he will step down, then he wants Peace, then he will not negotiate with Putin, he will not step down then this and that….nothing but an unstable grifting coke head.

Carve up Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Romania gets their historic territories back, leaving a broke, busted , disgusted , rump Ukraine to figure out where they went wrong.

If he’s not paying for exploration or production but merely taking 50% of whatever is ever produced, by someone else, it’s sort of no-lose.

Which is probably why it hasn’t been signed. Very one sided.

I’m betting Zelenskiy’s working with the Chinese. What a loyal guy.

When Europe ‘helped’ Zelenskiy they did it in the form of loans that had to be paid back. Smart.

Only Biden and Hunter said, ‘no problem’ American taxpayewrs would love to give to our favorite kickback central - and again, thanks for all the jobs... Hunter was worried he’d have to speak Ukraine - LOL - what a jokester’... he didn’t even have to show up. We’ve got your back for FREE Zelenskiy - we know you’ll be grateful...

Could be, but, Ukraine actually does have serious laws regarding mineral rights and landowners’ rights, and just usurping private landowner’s rights, esp. if they are oligarchs of significant power, could get pretty complicated and even dangerous for Z-man. Martial law might well over-ride those rights, but they might kick back in once martial law ended. Seems pretty messy on Z-Man’s end, to me.

12(?) years ago there were articles in mining and oil industry rags about exploration in Ukraine and around Crimea, by major western companies. For sure that’s roughly when some gas fields were found. I vaguely remember something about expansion of aluminum (bauxite) mining too, but no details. That might have been earlier. There are existing mines in Kherson, Mykolayiv, and Zaporizhzhya.

“Hold elections ...”

An independent Russian vote monitoring group said on Monday that the presidential election that Vladimir Putin won in a landslide with nearly 90% of the vote was the most fraudulent and corrupt in the country’s history.

Golos (Voice) said the three-day election that ended on Sunday could not be considered genuine because “the campaign took place in a situation where the fundamental articles of the Russian Constitution, guaranteeing political rights and freedoms, were essentially not in effect”.
