Representative Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican, voted against House Republicans' budget proposal on Tuesday night, siding with Democrats as the only GOP no vote.
Newsweek reached out to Massie's office via email Tuesday for comment.
President Donald Trump strongly endorsed the proposal, calling it a "big, beautiful bill," and urged House Republicans to vote for it.
But Massie voiced his opposition to the budget ahead of the vote saying on X (formerly Twitter), "The GOP budget extends the 5 yr. tax holiday we've been enjoying, but because it doesn't cut spending much, it increases the deficit by over $300 billion/yr. compared to letting tax cuts expire. Over 10 years, this budget will add $20 trillion to US debt."
Republicans were split over the budget in the past few weeks as many wanted to advance Trump's agenda, but others were concerned about the country's growing debt.
The House ultimately passed the proposal 217-215. The proposal called for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and $2 trillion in cuts to spending, which have sparked concerns about the future of Medicaid.
With a razor thin House majority, Republicans could only afford to lose one vote, meaning the proposal would have failed if any other GOP members voted with Massie against it.

Tom “Look at Me” Massie at it again!
Soooo, are we to believe that Massie is really on to something? Gosh, I better think about rethinking this whole thing! /s
My thoughts exactly!
check his bank account and affiliations
Yep. DOGE needs to audit his ass.
Go WASH your GREASY HAIR, Massie!
& DOJ
The CBO doesn’t score tax cuts properly. If tax cuts continue, government revenues will increase not decrease. .
This guy obviously knows about the Laffer curve but he’s on some stupid ego kick. If he keeps this up, Trump should go to his district and support a reliable primary replacement. Enough of this crap.
The enemy of good is perfect, that’s what this idiot savant is doing.
I bet this jerk voted for every Biden spending bill.
The next Mike Pence? Traitor?
Actually, he has a point. Balance the budget now.
At first glance, I thought that Kentucky’s Massie caught the Mitch Turtle virus.
I support Massie’s vote as a protest vote, assuming that he is a team player and would have supported Trump if his vote were required to pass the legislation.
He is correct in what he says.
The next Mike Pence? Traitor?

No, I think he is a very principled guy who is fed up with the UniParty increasing spending and the debt. In fact, I remember when Freepers were calling Rs traitors and turncoats for opposing Bush’s “No Child Left Behind” crap. I wish we had more Massie’s in DC.
Great take!
He’s a tedious scold.
The “budget” increases debt by $2 trillion per year.
Since when do we assume a $2 trillion debt increase every year???
What a crappy budget!
Honor is a gift a man gives himself. Deep Respect to the Kentuckians of the 4th district for sending a representative who cares about the future of our nation.

Exactly. If Ronald Reagan had listened to arguments like Massie’s, his tax cuts/reforms would have never occurred, the economy he inhererited from Carter would have continued to stall, and we would have remained stuck with the 90% marginal rate in effect when Nixon lost to JFK.
Is this guy setting himself up as Mitch McConnell's logical successor?
