Russia Appears To Deploy Troops on Horseback in Ukraine
Newsweek ^ | Feb 10, 2025 | Isabel van Brugen

Russia appears to have begun to deploy its troops on horseback in Ukraine, as reports emerge that President Vladimir Putin has nearly depleted his Soviet military stockpiles.

Newsweek has contacted the Russian government for comment by email.

Why It Matters

Reports that Russia's military is using horses in the war suggests that Putin is resorting to extreme measures due to equipment shortages caused by his full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched in 2022. The conflict has resulted in the largest depletion of Russia's military equipment in 80 years, independent news outlet The Insider reported earlier this month.

What To Know

Videos circulating on Russian Telegram channels appear to show Russian soldiers mounted on horses. Newsweek has yet to verify the details.

"You've got a docile horse, an obedient one," one Russian soldier said to another in a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, by Anton Gerashchenko, a former adviser to Ukraine's minister of internal affairs. "You're a good rider."

The other soldier complained: "These horses are so slow!"

That’s old news. They’ve been using them to move supplies.

We had special forces guys who used horses in the early days of the Afghanistan invasion. Good for mountainous terrain where there were no roads.

It’s good propaganda though for the zeepers.

Russia’s got nothing left...soon they’ll be riding sheep! :)

The guy who posted this article isn’t a zeeper, he posts lots of great articles :)

This one just happens to be fodder for zeepers.

And their insanity.

Lord, that nutty oriental woman Isabel van Brugen again. Now she claims Russians are on horses because everything is depleted.
It’s like that movie The Postman!

She’s a heck of a shill, I’ll give her that.
IF some Russian is on a horse somewhere, doing something, I would bet it is in one place, for some specific oddball reason, like the way our Special Forces did in Afghanistan initially.

And having been a grunt once, the idea that it was some idiots who found some horses and started screwing around cannot be discounted.

The last successful cavalry charge was in March of 1945. That was almost 80 years ago. But you never know. Everything old just might be new again.

Even today, a pack mule is an infantryman's best friend.

"We had special forces guys who used horses in the early days of the Afghanistan invasion. Good for mountainous terrain where there were no roads."

We also had mounted Air Force Security Police patrols at Clark AB in the Philippines until it was closed in 1991. I would have loved to have that duty.

Horse traffic is relatively difficult to target either drone strikes and a soldier on a horse is about as low a value target as you can get.
