Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told reporters Tuesday that the administration plans to offer a “gold card” that would confer legal residency to foreigners at a cost of about $5 million. They said it would replace an existing U.S. visa program for overseas investors that’s long been mired in controversy.
The president and Lutnick outlined a program that would also allow corporations to purchase U.S. residency, commonly known as a “green card,” for high-skilled or highly educated employees, suggesting it might replace some kinds of work visa.
“ It’s going to be giving you green card privileges plus,” Trump said. “It’s gonna be a route to citizenship, and wealthy people will be coming into our country.‘

Trump is always thinking.
There I stuck my neck into the pot! LOLOL
good. that is a gold plated employer paid tariff and i’m all for it if it gets rid of H1B, etc.
I hope it is replacing H-1B.
Two ‘mystical’ predictions:
#1. Foreigners will make big fun of Trump’s Gold Card proposal (How utterly gauche!!).
#2. Foreigners will figuratively line up for miles to buy one for themselves, so they won’t be left out, looking into this new and exclusive club.
We hate our own children.
Many countries allow you to purchase citizenship in some manner. I am in favor of it. The rich won’t come on the dole. They will spend their money here. They will be vetted as well. This would be completely separate from our other legal immigration which needs to be revamped. We’ve taken in enough poor. Time for some skilled folks. Of course there will be a place for some seeking asylum from persecution and death. We need some guidelines and priorities set.
Lots of countries have similar plans. I’d support such a plan as long as all the person could get is a Green Card....never citizenship.
That would be good.
I read somewhere that the H-1B program was sold on the premise that when companies were unable to acquire workers from among the population, they could fill important spots with foreign workers. Unfortunately, I also read that many companies do not attempt to find programmers or engineers locally. Rather, they just hire the foreigners, who work cheap.
anyone willing to invest 5 million plus in America deserves citizenship.

Selling citizenship?
I live in a suburban town that has a huge high tech office building on one side of town. In another part of town is a cluster of four apartment/condo complexes that have a combined total of more than a thousand units. Walking past these complexes on a school day morning one sees most of the kids...and parents...waiting for buses are Indians.
Absolutely brilliant! A million gold cards would indeed produce $5T plus the taxes they’d pay on their incomes and investments! Rest assured, there’ll be a firestorm about bringing in these affluent while pushing the gangbangers out the back door.
Brain drain. I like it.
Nope...being allowed to live and work here is enough of a reward for a $5 million investment.
So...citizenship really IS for sale, Mr. Trump?
Bad idea. Very bad idea.
If investment in America is in the best interest of the foreign corporation, then it is in their best interest even absent some twisted ‘pathway to citizenship’.
The truth is MANY foreign countries have similar systems. Two that I am personally aware of are Australia and New Zealand. Brings in much needed capital and affluent people who will be self supporting and/or new business owners.
THOSE are the sort immigrants we need!!!
many countries like Switzerland and New Zealand require lots of money to come live there.
