Starbucks plans to lay off 1,100 corporate employees globally as new Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol streamlines operations.

In a letter to employees released Monday, Niccol said the company will inform employees who are being laid off by mid-day Tuesday. Niccol said Starbucks is also eliminating several hundred open and unfilled positions.

"Our intent is to operate more efficiently, increase accountability, reduce complexity and drive better integration," Niccol wrote in the letter.

Sipping a cold brew right now - I got to Starbucks way too much - but yes this is good news. Quality not quantity.

In 1981, I worked at a restaurant tending bar. Next to the timeclock was a posting on the wall that said, "Reaganomics is here. Be useful, don't be wasteful, or don't clock in."

A year later in my first "real job", our weekly meeting would commence with a reminder we were GD lucky we have our jobs because any idiot off the street could perform our duties just fine. The reality was that we all knew we were the last batch of idiots off the street, and had better do well and get promoted into a position that was important and of value to the organization.

And there is such a chasm between employees who see themselves as actual baristas and care šŸµā˜•ļøvs. entitled gen z stoneršŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø types literally taking up space at a drive- thru window and could care less your order’s wrong or missing something because by the time you drive off it’s just too late anyway. 😠

There’s a cliche’ which is apropos here imho (their coffee has always sucked)

It’s a shame that you don’t have multiple options (we have over a dozen chains here giving sb a run for their lives)

“DEI” Is supposed to stand for “Decaf, Extra Sugar, and Inside”......It’s not supposed to fill six floors of your headquarters.

And don’t get me started on how annoying it was when states like mine started to ban plastic straws and condiments, and when gender neutral bathrooms and transgender flags everywhere became a thing 😷. It just totally destroyed the culture of the place and poisoned interactions in subtle yet profound ways. Trump reestablishing plastic straws with executive order delighted me.

First World problems 😌

1994 had a Starbucks that produced great ground bean coffee.

It all went downhill with a retail business model. At first it was mostly commercial, and free sample packs on select airlines. Their retail business model was their hype and "Brand Name Value" demise. By 1999 I wouldn't buy anything from them going forward. You could throw a Starbucks sign up over a sewage treatment plant and sales would continue. As brand value rises, the product value declines, in most cases of retail business.

I wouldn’t be surprised if all those that were let go were part of unionized Starbucks’ shops.

LOL no wonder I’m no fan of DEI! I like extra (caffeinated) shots, and half or unsweetened, with honey/agave on the side. šŸ™‚šŸ™ƒ
