U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the closure of the U.S. military base in Alexandroupoli, Greece, according to the Greek newspaper Dimokratia.

However, the reports remain unconfirmed by Greek defense officials.

The reported decision from Trump may indicate a shift in U.S. military strategy in the region against Russia and has reportedly raised concerns among Greek officials.

US military base in Alexandroupoli and Türkiye’s concerns.

The U.S. base in the region was a major source of tension between the U.S. and Türkiye.

However, U.S. officials repeatedly reassured Türkiye that the U.S. forces’ deployment in the area was not against the country.

“Greece, as a whole, has turned into a U.S. military base,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had said in 2021 referring to United States’ numerous military installations in Greece’s Alexandroupoli (Dedeagac).

Alexandroupoli is a Greek port located on the Aegean Sea right next to the Turkish border, at the north-eastern tip of Greece.

I don’t know about this. Playing nice with Turkey will bite us in the butt down the road.

From https://tass.com/world/1918237 :

The base has undermined Turkey’s monopoly over the Bosporus Strait. Its closure would restore Turkey’s absolute control over the entry and exit of military and merchant vessels to and from the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea.

Possibly just a shift from Greece to newer facilities and a new defense deal with Cyprus.

Nothing boasts security in Europe like two NATO members ready to go to war with each other.

American involvement in Europe should have ended in the 1980s.

NATO was created to contain the Soviet Union, which collapsed in the 90s. Now, it exists to contain Russia. With Russia on the brink of collapse itself, it should surprise no one that Greece and Turkey resume open hostilities to each other.

That statement proves how inept NATO is. That is a stupid, premature attitude for two members of NATO to have. And it shows that they don’t see Russia as a threat. They can’t have it both ways.

End of discussion. Goodbye.

Apparently, this “report” was a click-bait headline from a Greek newspaper.

Put the name ‘Trump’ in a screaming headline, get clicks.
