Apple announces $500 billion US investment in bet 'on the future of American innovation'

Apple (AAPL) announced Monday that it will spend and invest more than $500 billion in the US over the next four years, including plans to build a new manufacturing factory, double its advanced manufacturing fund, and hire 20,000 people.

"We are bullish on the future of American innovation, and we're proud to build on our long-standing U.S. investments with this $500 billion commitment to our country’s future,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.

"From doubling our Advanced Manufacturing Fund, to building advanced technology in Texas, we’re thrilled to expand our support for American manufacturing. And we’ll keep working with people and companies across this country to help write an extraordinary new chapter in the history of American innovation.”

Apple's announcement comes just days after President Trump said Cook promised him hundreds of millions of dollars in US investment and that the tech giant’s manufacturing would shift from Mexico to the US.

"They don't want to be in the tariffs," Trump said Friday.

There is a risk that Apple could be among the companies negatively impacted by fresh trade tensions between the US and China in Trump's second term. The Trump administration imposed a 10% tariff on all Chinese goods earlier this month, though Evercore ISI analysts have estimated the potential financial impact on Apple would be relatively minimal.

Cook is among the American tech leaders who have worked to reestablish or overhaul their relationship with Trump following his reelection.

Following Monday's announcement, Trump thanked Cook and Apple in a post on Truth Social, writing the company's investment is based on "faith in what we are doing."

Cook has reportedly traveled to the president's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, as has Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Alphabet's Sundar Pichai, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Arguably this wouldn't have happened if not for Trump's tariffs. Yahoo Finance has had a number of articles about the alleged negative impact of the tariffs. Nice that they tell about the positives as well.

Like Tesla, Apple’s long-term prospects don’t look good in China.

One of the most under reported stories of the past few decades was that Apple factories in Red China had so many on job suicides that it had to put suicide nets outside of factory windows.

American businessmen need to face the reality that they have enabled China to become Americas biggest adversary and as soon as it’s convenient China will take their business. And we, as Americans, better figure out if we don’t stop buying Chinese crap, we are buying our own demise.

Remember, under Trump 1.0, Foxconn pledged to create facilities in Wisconsin to manufacture LCD panels. That went nowhere.

Apple has too much dependence on China for manufacturing. Peter Zeihan has mentioned this dependence many times. Perhaps this pledge is to reduce dependence on Chyna.

If Apple opens a factory in the US, will they relocate the slave labor that builds phones in China, or direct import slave/illegal labor aliens direct from other parts of the Americas?

The deal was dependent on Owens Corning making a large-panel glass fab nearby. They declined after the deal had already been inked. So Foxconn had to scale back and change it’s mission.

The parts are made all over the world, including the US - the parts are shipped to China were they are assembled, not manufactured. Chinese fight to get those well-paying (for China) jobs - they are hardly slave labor.

700,000,000 Chinese are poor by any standard ( except by the official CCP line ).

Mar-a-Laga is quite the hubbub of financial and political activities for President Trump. That man can sure pick winners.

I was paying 40 for my phones last year...but I went crazy and bougtht a 110 dollar almost like new one this year :)

I haven’t kept up on how much they can do now so the old ones are good for me...just the internet, text and calling and I’m good.

You guys that know how to use it get your money’s worth out of the newer ones so it’s worth it.

I’m not taking a Democrat view of pledges for Trump. Trump is a master promoter. Business pledges do need to be verified.

IF Apple follows through, it’ll be interesting to see if Texas benefits & Cupertino sees no benfit.
