West Virginia Legislature Considers Bill to Reinstate Corporal Punishment in Public Schools

A new bill introduced in the West Virginia House of Delegates could bring back corporal punishment in public schools, reversing a long-standing prohibition. House Bill 2545 aims to permit school principals to administer moderate corporal punishment under specific policies set by the State Board of Education and county boards.

If passed, the bill would amend the Code of West Virginia to include the following provisions:

Authorization for Principals: School principals would be allowed to administer corporal punishment, provided they follow policies established by state and local education boards.

Parental Involvement and Alternatives: The bill encourages county boards to consider alternative disciplinary measures and involve parents in maintaining school discipline.

Classroom Management: Current procedures for removing disruptive students from classrooms and school transportation would remain intact.

Teacher Authority: Teachers would have the authority to remove students from classrooms for disorderly conduct, with provisions for alternative placements and disciplinary actions.

The proposed legislation has sparked considerable debate among educators, parents, and advocacy groups.

Supporters believe that reintroducing corporal punishment could restore classroom discipline and provide educators with more tools to manage disruptive behavior. They argue that additional disciplinary options would help maintain a focused learning environment.

Opponents of the bill point to research suggesting that corporal punishment can negatively affect students' mental health and behavior. Advocacy groups warn that reinstating such practices could lead to legal challenges and potential conflicts with child protection regulations.

Currently under review by the West Virginia Legislature, House Bill 2545 represents a significant potential shift in the state’s approach to student discipline. If enacted, West Virginia would become one of the few states allowing corporal punishment in public schools.

I still remember Mrs. Ross, my grade school principal walking the halls like General Patton with that paddle. The the threat of it made kids behave.

Any teacher that puts a hand on mr as a child. Think Vito Corleone going back to Sicily to take out his mom’s killer.

Mr. Music always advised the boys to bend over and tuck. It was no love tap. Only got it once and learned not to do whatever again. Did I tell my folks? Hell no. It would have been a repeat performance.

Bad idea. In this day and age it’s just a lawsuit magnet.

Yet there must be so method to keep order in the schools. I would suggest after school detention for minor misbehavior and suspension for major ones.

Oh, and ALWAYS get the police involved for physical assaults. Too often school districts will avoid calling the cops because of the bad publicity. To hell with that. Student and staff safety must come first.

It works better on the younger kids than older. 1st through 4th grade. Get them inline then and they are better. Back in the day they only gave a kid one swat and it was really just a scare factor that worked.

I saw a video of a Florida principal what gave a kid three swats to a first grader and I was shocked she did that much. I think only one would have got the point across.

Also when I was growing up there always had to be another teacher around as a witness. I’m sure they will do that again.

My concern here is what offenses would be eligible for corporal punishment. With the current liberal and anti American mindset of most of the public education community, I could see “Jimmy, it’s a shame you disrespected the class by saying that Israel had a right to go into Gaza. Bend over”

I experienced it- and was often ‘corrected’ but fortunately we were told ahead of time and wore several pairs of long johns if it was winter- right around jr high, parents began suing- so they stopped the punishments, and that is when kids started getting totally out of control- The inmates began running the asylum when that happened- so to speak-

Why make schools deal with delinquent kids? Expel them and send them home to their dear parents. Too bad we can’t spank some of those parents.
