This podcast covers a good interview of Blackwater founder Erik Prince and his thoughts on modern warfare, from the Ukraine war to the Houthi blockade to the defense of Taiwan. Lots of interesting comments from an expert in modern warfare who (through his family connections/experience in the automotive industry) is equally an expert in the manufacturing base that undergirds military preparedness.

I was intrigued, for example, by his advice for Taiwan to basically rely on a national militia of trained irregulars who would pick up weapons from local depots (police/fire stations and the like) to make Taiwan too difficult to defeat even if China took out the major weapon systems and military formations of Taiwan's regular military. Not as profitable for the MIC, but a tougher nut for the CCP to crack.

Just give Taiwan a fully armed Ohio Class sub.

How many torpedoes does it carry? What happens when it runs out?

See, this is exactly the sort of thing Erik talks about in the interview. Over-reliance on multi-billion dollar boondoggles will bankrupt us, while enemies overwhelm us with cheaper mass-produced weapons.

“ How many torpedoes does it carry?”

24 long range nuclear missiles. Think there are some Ohio Class subs with conventional harpoons. Not sure if either are Mirved.

Whoops, yeah I realized after I posted that. ;-)

Problem is, in an era of proliferating missile defense systems, a nuclear missile submarine is not the deterrent it once was. I'd rather place my faith in a million militia.
