Shares of UnitedHealth Group (NYSE:UNH) fell sharply in premarket trading Friday after The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) has launched a new civil fraud investigation into the company's business practices.
The probe focuses on how UnitedHealth adds questionable diagnoses to members' medical records, allegedly inflating payments for its Medicare Advantage plans. The investigation also involves the Office of Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, according to sources cited in the report.

This is one of the worst kept secrets ever. Everyone knew United was crooked but they must have been funding Democrats. Looking into Medicare and Medicaid fraud is going to freak them out.
When people learn the full truth of all of this, the ones in charge won’t be able to walk down the street. Oh, wait ... we may already have reached that point.
Still the Mangione fanbois won’t care, since it’s “Evil” Trump doing it.
That should be criminal, not civil.
It’s maddening that they won’t authorize procedures that are needed and turn around and submit requests for payment for the very same procedure that wasn’t allowed.
They’re enemy is capitalism. It’s no wonder the guy got shot. Feeds the narrative.
United Health is just a consequence and symptom of America’s bloated, cost-shifting, crony-socialist and Democrat-run health care system.
They are just playing the game according to the complex rules Government has made
I’m glad they are looking into this my mom has Medicare advantage through United healthcare it’s crap she pays more monthly now than last yr and the price of her meds went up
They have been awful for decades. Used to be they simply slow paid or no paid fee-for-service. Then they developed the black box edits to deny claims. Fortunately, there are whistle blowers today for the Medicare Advantage inflated diagnoses.
Hopefully, more people will learn UHC has its tentacles all over healthcare billing and reimbursement. They own Optum too.
Of course they are and upcoding is a time honored art form in the never ending quest to maximize cash flow by medical providers. Yet there is some irony that FedGov paid hospitals additional dollars for patients with a covid diagnosis whether or not covid was the reason the patient was in the hospital to begin with.
Guaranteed they are not alone in the practice, they need to investigate all , kaiser, Blue Shield, etc.
I agree, fraud, pure and simple, and practicing medicine without a license
But the allegation here is that the physicians and provideres did not upcode, it was UNITED who upcoded. Dispicable
So go after them first, then everyone else. And I do mean “everyone else”. There are no insurance companies not guilty of fraud at some level and they need punishment.
Just wait until DOGE starts poking around in the HealthCare.gov market place, methinks United Health will be the tip of the proverbial iceburg ...
I’m not cheering the shooter on.
But I don’t like this company either. We were denied a few times for certain things that were never made clear. My company offers UH and I’m not sure its worth it as this point.
It’s no surprise the captains of this epic greed have become targets.
Break up United Health?
And anyone who thinks Mangione was acting ALONE is a nut job. The "homeless person" standing next to Mangione as he fired his weapon was a LOOKOUT. And seriously, if you look at the video of the murder it doesn't at all look like Mangione was AIMING AT HIS LEG yet that is where the first shot landed.
The murder of CEO Brian Thompson was a CONSPIRACY involving more persons than just Mangione. BET ON IT.
