France’s President Emmanuel Macron intends to tell U.S. President Donald Trump to toughen up and not “be weak” in the face of Vladimir Putin’s aggression when the two leaders meet in Washington, DC, next week.
The pair will talk as U.S.-led negotiations to end the almost three-year war in Ukraine move forward.
AP reports Macron used a one-hour question and answer session on his social media Thursday to declare he’ll tell Trump: “You can’t be weak in the face of President Putin. It’s not you, it’s not your trademark, it’s not in your interest. How can you then be credible in the face of China if you’re weak in the face of Putin?”
Trump plans to have direct negotiations with Moscow to seek peace in Ukraine while leaving European allies and Kyiv officials worried they are being pushed aside into irrelevance.

Macron is probably saying similar things to Putin behind the scenes. He was the kid in school who provoked a fight between two of his classmates, then sat back and watched.

I think it was Ariel Sharon (of Israel) that said: “The Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity”, regarding the ‘peace process’.
I guess the European version would be: “Today’s European leaders never miss an opportunity to totally screw things up for themselves.”

As I see it, Trump has 4 options regarding NATO:
1. Do nothing, keep NATO moving east, as Biden did.
2. Pull back from the east, maybe to Cold War borders
3. Pull out of Europe, but stay in NATO
4. Pull out of NATO completely
Macron seems to be trying to drive Trump to choosing one of the latter options.
Macron is a little “slow” on the uptake. The Germans have suddenly figured out that Trump is re-negotiating the terms of the NATO alliance and they are in a near-state of panic.
France is Trump’s negotiating-partner, which is pretty ironic considering France’s historical ambivalence toward the alliance.
From what I’ve seen just by Google searches, the EU has about triple the population of Russia and about ten times Russia’s GDP. Given those numbers, how is Russia even remotely a threat to conquer a unified Europe? The current state of Russia is a pale shadow of the old Soviet Union. It just isn’t the same threat level. NATO really is a Cold War anachronism at this point. Withdrawing from NATO and leaving the defense of Europe up to the Europeans would be a good move at this point.
