NY prison ‘riot’ erupts, all visits canceled at 42 state prisons as union strikes rage

Corrections officials have ended all outside visits to New York state prisons in the wake of a growing jail guard strike and sporadic inmate unrest — as riots erupted at another upstate prison early Thursday.

The newest uprising by out-of-control inmates struck the Riverview Correctional Facility, which sits near the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Ogdensburg.

No staffers were hurt during the chaos, which WWNY 7 News said broke out overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

Union guard strike? Collective bargaining for public employees is a hard no.

As I’m sure you’ll agree, unions are (by and large) corrupt. But sometimes they’re the only ones who will tell you what’s really going on.

Perhaps that’s the case here.

Slap all of the union guards in irons and put them in the same prisons they were hired to guard.

In the seventies when I lived in NY I was being driven to work going down the Long Island Expressway and we passed one of those huge overcrowded cemetaries.

The coffins were piled three on top of each other. I asked the person I was with what was going on.

He said ‘the gravediggers union is on strike’.

I still remember that. Was an unbelievable sight. The seventies and union strikes, all the time. Very disruptive period.

Wonder if there is a plan to do this stuff again, who is behind this, if it is the same, is this a tactic the left is using again?

I was watching this old movie with George Raft and Jimmy Cagney.
They were in sing sing and started a riot.
National guard showed up and hosed the place with .50 cal machine guns
and tear gas.
The ancients were way smarter than we give them credit for

Slap all of the union guards in irons and put them in the same prisons they were hired to guard.

For a significant percentage of them, it would not be a major problem. They've already aligned themselves with the prisoners instead of the prison.

(My ex's 98-lb female cousin with the neck tattoos is somewhat renown for getting passed around as a sex toy in her job as a prison guard at a men's prison in Indiana. She would openly talk about which guards would help with drugs and cell phones and cigs and everything else that the inmates could want... and most of the guards doing it did it for attention and camaraderie, not even for money.)

I retired as a NY State Correctional Sergeant in 2003. The last strike in NY's prison system was in 1979. They were out 16 days.

This strike is more about the fact that Albany passed The HALT ACT, regarding the disciplinary segregation policy as it is related to inmate disciplinary punishment. The State has limited segregation to 15 days, and banned it altogether for certain groups of people, recommending “more humane” options. In other words, touchy-feeling coddling the convicts.

The union ratified a new 3 year contact in April 2024.

All right all you smart asses.

These guys are not striking for money. There are literally THOUSANDS of unfilled positions available if you want them.

If you want to work 16 and 24 hour shifts, multiple times per week, week after week, wile under constant treat of attack, come on down.

If you want to be hauled away in ambulances because you are being exposed to fentnyl and God knows what else that damn near KILLS you, come on down and join up.

If you want shit thrown at you by convicts who, by law, can no longer be punished in any meaningful way, come on down.

If you want an average life expectancy of 58, yes 58 years, come on down.

These guys are not asking for a raise, they are asking for relief. Not every strike is based on greed, not every strike is unjust.

And just as an aside, their UNION did not and does not authorize the strike.

THIS IS WHY

10 Reasons Why?

You let half the inmate population go back to the street, miraculously cured? You thought, Prisons are only for the so called “violent”. (You can ask NYC Subway riders if that was a good decision?)

You asked your Officers to suck it up: and they did…
Now that you freed up all that prison space at the expense of the safety of our citizens, you decided to close jails causing staff to relocate, causing communities to mourn the loss of good jobs. You asked your Officers to suck it up: and they did…

When you closed facilities, you didn’t consider the type of facility you were closing, you closed Max’s… While the Officers are on strike, I bet you miss having the cells provided at such places as Downstate, Southport, and Great Meadow, pretty hard to manage without cells, It must be really nice managing a strike in medium security dormitories with no cells, hint: 1979 was mostly cells.

You asked your Officers to suck it up: and they did…

When two dangerous killers escaped Clinton due to the shortcomings of some staff, instead of just disciplining the bad staff, you punished all staff. Instead of recognizing the heroic action of those who beat the bushes for 3 weeks, they were instead rewarded with see through bags. You then fired the one Superintendent, who if anybody, had a chance at righting the ship, improving discipline and morale, it was the one you fired!

You asked your Officers to suck it up: and they did…

Untrained may see this as a little thing. It is actually a big thing! For some political, feel good, liberal reason, you decided to call convicted felons “Incarcerated Individuals” without taking a moment to understand the Officer/Inmate dynamic and the rule of order.
You asked your Officers to suck it up: and they did…

Along comes HALT, instead of standing with the Officers, you capitulated to the most ridiculous, dangerous, outrageous legislation any jail person or family member could ever think of. (This alone is cause for Job action)
You asked your Officers to suck it up: and they did…

You act surprised when Officers retire 25 to the day, you are even more surprised, when they quit without reaching 25. You blame society when you fail to recruit new Officers. Somehow your bad management can’t even staff half the jails we used to have. Of course the only action you can think of is to have mandatory sticks, and while once forbidden, you order officers to 24 hour shifts. Did you ever consider closing some programs, instead of making folks work 24 hours?
You asked your Officers to suck it up: and they did…

Along come Fentanyl, a difficult situation to be sure! We see employees go down, having to be revived with Narcan, then we see large scale incidents with multiples, dozen or more employees go down in one incident. Sure you lock down and search, but I ask why such a hurry to reopen? Why is there still paper mail, why is there still packages, why are there still contact visits? When will staff be more important than programs and convicts?
You asked your Officers to suck it up: and they did…

Inmate Brooks and Marcy: We all saw the video. If the evidence reveals what the video appears to reveal, by all means act upon the staff involved not only for the sake of the inmate, but for the sake of the safety of all staff and convicts. REMEMBER THIS! About a dozen Officers were involved with Brooks, thousands of other Officers were not! When the video was unnecessarily released to the public, did anyone even consider what affect it would have on the safety of the facilities, the convicts, the staff, The Officers families? Was the only consideration covering political asses? It is possible to prosecute bad staff without placing good staff in jeopardy!
You asked your Officers to suck it up: and they did…

A ridiculous memo, when perfectly timed with an inmate uprising can cause spectacular results. So the inmates at Collins took over a few dorms. Officers are tough, and we have the best CERT Teams in the business. The Officers will tolerate bad inmate behavior when they are allowed to fight back, but when you demoralize them with all of the above and at the same time release a memo that says 30% short is the new normal, you may have just hit the “Enough is Enough” button!

You asked your Officers to suck it up: and they??? Didn’t suck it up again? Is anyone surprised?

“Slap all of the union guards in irons and put them in the same prisons they were hired to guard.”

Well, genius, NOBODY will take those jobs. They are already short THOUSANDS of officers, and can only get about 400 per year to take the job. There are over a thousand retirements per year.

So I ask you, just who will guard THEM?
