Kremlin says joining the EU is Ukraine's sovereign right

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Kremlin said on Tuesday that it was Ukraine's sovereign right to decide whether it wanted to join the European Union and that Moscow did not intend to dictate to Kyiv how it should approach the question.

Asked if Ukraine could one day join the European Union, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "This is the sovereign right of any country."

"We are talking about integration and economic integration processes. And here, of course, no one can dictate anything to any country, and we are not going to do that," Peskov said.

Peskov added, though, that Russia's position was different when it came to Ukraine joining military alliances.

"There is a completely different position, of course, on security-related issues related to defence or military alliances," Peskov said.

An interesting development that few anticipated.

Russia offers a bifurcation of the commercial and military. It also implies full autonomy in Ukraine with the exception of alliance and military posture.

Brilliant opening move and it'll put "the west" back on their heels.

And Ukraine will have to deal with the blizzard of regulations coming out of Brussels.

Yes, join the Antichrist’s empire, with its capital in Rome. Great idea. (wink)

Letting another corrupt & bankrupt mudhole of a country join the EU suggests the Ruskies might have a sense of humor, after all...

Perhaps the thought here is that Ukraine will simultaneously be a drag on the EU economy and also become so dissatisfied with the stifling restrictions that Russia will look better and better.

In the past Putin said it was Ukraine’s right to join NATO since they are a free country.

Russia is offering Ukraine and Europe a face saving exit.

But I don’t think they are smart enough to take it.

“In the past Putin said it was Ukraine’s right to join NATO since they are a free country.”

Got a citation for that?

And yet it was Putin’s intervention to stop the Ukraine-EU economic agreement that started this drama.

You’ll have to ask them, things look pretty good for those of us interested in national defense though.

Smart move. A while ago Alex and Alexander were in STITCHES about the thought of the EU having to carry the weight of Ukraine on their backs...so it was a throwaway for the Russians.

Interestingly, Google and Yahoo have not heard of such a thing either.

I guess we just missed lol

So, I gotta call BS!

Yep, this underscores the hypocrisy of the Neocons/zeepers. They imagined they were defending Ukraine from slavery, when the only risk of enslavement is coming from the globalists pushing their demands for cultural, economic and political control down Ukraine’s throat.

That’s not why he invaded, and everyone seems to know that but you.
