February marks Black History Month, a tradition that got its start in the Jim Crow era and was officially recognized in 1976 as part of the nation's bicentennial celebrations. It aims to honor the contributions that African Americans have made and to recognize their sacrifices.
Here are three things to know about Black History Month:
It was Negro History Week before it was Black History Month In 1926, Carter G. Woodson, the scholar often referred to as the "father of Black history," established Negro History Week to focus attention on Black contributions to civilization.
According to the NAACP, Woodson — at the time only the second Black American after W.E.B. Du Bois to earn a doctorate from Harvard University — "fervently believed that Black people should be proud of their heritage and [that] all Americans should understand the largely overlooked achievements of Black Americans."
Woodson, the son of former enslaved people, famously said: "If a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated."
Woodson chose a week in February because of Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday was Feb. 12, and Frederick Douglass, who was born enslaved and did not know his actual birth date, but chose to celebrate it on Feb. 14.
"Those two people were central to helping to afford Black people the experience of freedom that they have now," W. Marvin Dulaney, president of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) told NPR in 2023.
Woodson founded ASALH in 1915 and today is the official promoter of Black History Month.

I think I’ll rewatch some episodes of Amos and Andy on YouTube later.
Can someone tell me when White History Month is? Or are White accomplishments not enough to get a month for them?
There is only one true history, but many perspectives. George Orwell, 1984: “Do you realize that the past, starting from yesterday, has been actually abolished? ….. Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And that process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
Just think. The single sheet of toilet paper lady and Tesla boycotter, Sheryl Crowbait probably paid for this for NPR.
If they celebrated white accomplishments there would not be enough months in the year.
:-)
I used to complain about not having a month and then a black person reminded me that every day is white American day. Hmmmm.
Self censored.
Leftists: Nope. We gotta keep everybody divided about something.
Why is NPR promoting such a hatful racist event?
In all seriousness, if I were a teacher, the one way I would acknowledge Black History Month, is to make everyone read Booker T. Washington’s “Up From Slavery”.

with the car she sold for $$$$ in the fall of last year, the vid of her saying goodbye reviels the trees are in autumn mode. Typical dumb a## liberal. I just hope the single toilet sheet Madame is tossing a nice healthy green salad for her liberal guests with no gloves on
With MLKJr Day, Juneteenth, and Black History Month, they still fall far short of the LGBTQR2+PDQ People.
They’ll eventually get Harvey Milk Day.
I saw The Jeffersons the other night so I’ve done my part! Oh and I slipped on some African American ice the other day
They’ve alread named a Navy Ship after him.

Even if the White population agrees to give them a Holiday, it's not good enough for them because it was touched by our hands. This is some other kind of race hatred.
Then why don't I see public service announcements on TV announcing it, or one-hour TV programs to brag about White accomplishments? The month seems to be saying: We're surprised by Black accomplishments, so we need to set aside a time to tell people. Really? We all know they have contributed over time, from Thomas Mundy Peterson, George Washington Carver, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, and all the others who have made a mark in history. But do their deeds overshadow similar marks in history made by other non-Blacks Americans? I'd rather see all this hoopla called American History month.
I immediately wondered if Carter Woodson was any relation to Robert Woodson, who founded the Woodson Center; but apparently not:
