Four magical words: From “Quebec the province” to “Quebec the nation”? President Trump is a deal-maker, and he can make it happen

Ali Baba had two: “Open Sesame!”

Lydia had three: “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.”

Dorothy, five: “There’s no place like home.”

All got results, almost instantly.

Donald Trump has four magical words. But unlike the other three, they are rooted in reality, not fiction. Yet they will be as effective.

If Donald Trump is sincere about annexing Canada as the 51st state, tariffs are not the way to go. All that tariffs have done so far is unite Canadians. It’s not going to take long for Trump to realize that the opposite approach will be much more effective: disunity. And four magical words uttered by Donald Trump is all that’s needed:

“Vive le Québec libre”

Every single voter in Quebec — and Canada — knows the implications of those four words. And if Trump dares to speak them, the 51st state is a done deal. All that will be left for Canadians to do is to plan for the inevitable.

Charles de Gaulle spoke those words in 1967 from the balcony of Montreal’s City Hall. Thousands of French-Canadians were gathered below. His words didn’t launch the Quebec separatist movement because it had already started, but it did give the movement much needed credibility. Nine years later, in 1976, the first separatist government was elected to power. The Parti Quebecois then governed Quebec for 20 of the next 48 years.

This included holding two referendums, asking the people of Quebec whether they wanted Quebec to secede from Canada and become its own nation.  The last referendum, in 1995, was a squeaker. The “YES” side lost 49.4% to 50.6%; only 54,288 out of over 4,671,008 cast.

A house divided cannot stand. Just ask East and West Pakistan how that worked out. An independent Quebec will be a severing down the middle with Eastern Canada on one side

The Parti Quebecois has already announced that if they win the next provincial election they will hold a third referendum.

Even the slightest of nudges from a sitting U.S. president will go a long way to easing the fears of those Quebec voters who would otherwise be reluctant to vote “yes.” And Trump saying “Vive le Québec libre” is one huge nudge.

When zeepers kept talking about how “Ukraine is a free and independent nation that can do what it wants”

I always thought - what if Quebec was independent, and as a security guarantee, they felt they needed Russian missiles or Chinese troops?

Not good.

We should not encourage instability.

Oh my gosh.

If President Trump could figure out how to give their French Canadians their separatist dream and break them off into a country all of their own the rest of Canada would sign up to join the US as 51st state out of heart felt gratitude.

And our new 51st state would be leading the charge to stick it to them with tariffs.

Quebec is an economic basket case without the money from the prairie provinces. If I were them, I would focus on becoming a North American Cayman Islands, a place friendly to foreigners parking money. I don’t think they have it in them.

Just a small point of interest, Canada is the second largest country in the world (behind Russia).

If the US absorbed both Canada and Greenland, our combined area in square miles would make the new USA the second largest country in the world (behind Russia). Because Russia is just absolutely huge.

I agree, this is a solution looking for a problem.

And more than that, we should mind our own business. Quebec‘s status is none of our concern.

The U.S. has become balkanized to some degree with some areas looking and acting more like a Latin American city or country. If the author is suggesting that Canada become a state, it will contribute to further balkanization IMHO. I.e., Quebec is primarily French speaking and culture. Is this what we want to add to an already balkanized America?

We've made a mistake by failing to legislate English as our only national language and requiring that all legal and government documents - and schools use English only. A single common language would help to mitigate balkanization - IMHO.

Montreal Expos-80’s. Went to a game. They didn’t stand up for the national anthem. The sentiment is still there.

Trump is a disturber of the excrement. So am I.
In my case I say restore the Hawaiian monarchy.

Call for the independence of both and enjoy the popcorn.

Agree 100%, never should have been a state, and I lived there for 3 years.

Let's hope not.

Quebec has three things: tourism, agriculture and logging. All the other industries are dependent upon the rest of the provinces.

” And more than that, we should mind our own business. Quebec‘s status is none of our concern.”

The Canadian government inserted themselves into American politics, so it turned about as entirely fairly. Break up Canada.

Maple syrup, too.

Quebec is a pretty nice place. Mainly small towns.

It’s a lot like 1950’s America.

Getting rid of Trudeau and his globalist deep state cabal does not mean instability.
I doubt Quebec would become another Cuba. Despite its socialist government, it’s too tied into Canadian (oil) US and French economic interests.
