LATEST: Congress closing in on shutdown deadline with no clear plan

Congress is struggling to strike a deal to keep the government funded as a looming deadline to prevent a shutdown next month gets closer.

Lawmakers are less than a month away from a mid-March date to pass legislation to prevent a funding lapse — or risk the first shutdown in years.

“We can’t have precisely the same kind of deal we had before, and we’re trying to work to find some common ground,” House Appropriations Chair Tom Cole (R-Okla.) said shortly before the House left for a one-week recess this week.

Negotiators on both sides have been working to strike a spending deal for weeks, with hopes of crafting the 12 annual funding bills that could make it out of both chambers with bipartisan support – and across President Trump’s desk for signature.

But they also say the task has gotten more difficult as fallout spreads over a sweeping operation undertaken by the Trump administration to reshape the federal government

It’s clear that much of government is fraud and waste and abuse and mismanagement. Shut it down. For a long time. See if anyone misses it.

Looking at the Congress, Res do not need any Dem votes.
They running on “continuous resolutions” which just continues the dysfunction and waste.
Congressmen are supposed to have budget, balanced and on time!? We pay them to do that!

Yep. Shut it down. As long as the traffic lights still work, I think we’ll be fine.

“and we’re trying to work to find some common ground,” House Appropriations Chair Tom Cole (R-Okla.)”

This is the problem right here, Congress. Republicans have the majority, USE IT LOSERS.

Dems are ridiculous when they declare they will do things we actually want. Like Jim Acosta threatening a boycott or congress and the shutdown

Shut it down if they won’t agree to a line by line

I think they need a shut down. The GOP can use it as an example of the RAT boogieman that isn't. While congress is doing their job and putting a budget together D.O.G.E. is making the budget waste a hot topic and people are taking notice to the abuse, waste and fraud. NOW IS THE TIME to shut it down and broadcast 24/7 the budget negotiations. M2C.

In the future any threat of a shutdown can be muted with "why, what are you trying to hide/ram through?"

The US government is “Too Big To Fail”.

Therefore, not to worry.

The Government will bail itself out...

Sigh.

There us NO such thing as a government shutdown.

In the past Deep State has deemed anything it wanted to keep running as essential (to Deep State) and shuttered anything it wanted to use to being the pain to taxpayers (national parks).

I’m hoping Trump will call their bluff.

And I’ll bet the prospect of Trump doing just that is scaring Deep State 💩less.

“It looks like Cole and the GOP want a deal with the Dems.”

The deal is a budget and not a continuing resolution. Democrats are going to try to shut down the government to blame Trump. All Trump needs is for the Republicans in Congress to stay united. Reconciliation will do the rest.

Let DOGE review the budget bill.

Let DOGE strike out all fraud found in the bill.

I bet the 1000 page omnibus bill ends up less than 100 pages after a DOGE scrub.

When was the last time they obeyed their own edict and had an actual annual budget?

Not since they discovered they could steal much more with their continuing money-laundering schemes...

Given Trump’s popularity, running out the clock may FINALLY work against the Democrats.
