MANCHESTER, Ky. (KT) – Kentucky State Police (KSP) are continuing its investigation into an apparent home invasion this past weekend in Clay County that left both of the alleged suspects dead. KSP logo

On Saturday, shortly before 4:30 a.m., Clay County 911 contacted Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 11 in London to report a shooting incident within the city limits of Manchester. The Manchester Police Department responded to the scene and found two individuals who had been shot. They requested KSP’s assistance in investigating the matter.

Upon their arrival, troopers determined that the two men involved had forcibly entered a residence with the intention of stealing firearms from a safe. During the break-in, a juvenile resident of the home discovered the intruders and saw them holding firearms. The juvenile, acting in self-defense, retrieved a handgun and shot both men before escaping through a bedroom window.

The two men who were shot have been identified as:

--Roger D. Smith,44 of McKee. He was taken by ambulance to Advent Health Manchester by Clay County EMS but later died due to his injuries.

--Jeffrey M. Allen, 51, of Manchester, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Autopsies on the two men were scheduled to be performed Monday by the Medical Examiner

The investigation is ongoing, and Detective Logan Gay is leading the case. He was assisted on the scene by Post 11 Investigation Team. Manchester Police Department and the Clay County Coroner’s office.

No charges have been filed against the juvenile at this time and it will likely be in the hands of local prosecutors to decide on whether or not they wish the case to go the grand jury.

A juvenile resident of the home found the intruders with guns in their hands. He retrieved a handgun and shot them both. Then he retreated out a window. The case remains under investigation.

Allegedly suspected of what?

This is why I put a perimeter wire of high voltage around my property. But both of my neighbors are dead set against it.

A local radio show host said there needs to be a step above justifiable homicide. He called it praiseworthy homicide. This is such a case.

I assume the teenager allegedly shot the alleged dead guys in his home

It’s all alleged until proven, right?

You don’t have to call a dead person “alleged”. They don’t have rights anymore. Ifiot editors.

The USA has a much smaller percentage of home invasions than countries elsewhere in the world.

England, famously, has a higher percentage of home invasions than does the USA.

Many believe the difference is the high percentage of armed homeowners. It is why most burglars work hard to burgle when no one is at home.

In the UK if you injure a home invader it is you who will be brought up on charges. Many a story about that. One OAP lost his house over it because the relatives of the guy he killed (used a screwdriver while being strangled by the perp) harassed him to no end. Police and courts didn’t do anything about it.

They could be allegedly dead or just quietly lying there pining for the fjords.

A.P. Herbert of blessed memory wrote a short story for Punch magazine about a man prosecuted for killing a burglar . . . with a pitchfork.
