More than 250 people from 20 nationalities who had been working in telecom fraud centres in Myanmar's Karen State have been released by an ethnic armed group and brought to Thailand.
The workers, more than half of whom were from African or Asian nations, were received by the Thai army, and are being assessed to find out if they were victims of human trafficking.
Last week Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met Chinese leader Xi Jinping and promised to shut down the scam centres which have proliferated along the Thai-Myanmar border.
Her government has stopped access to power and fuel from the Thai side of the border, and toughened up banking and visa rules to try to prevent scam operators from using Thailand as a transit country for moving workers and cash.
Some opposition MPs in Thailand have been pushing for this kind of action for the past two years.
Foreign workers are typically lured to these scam centres by offers of good salaries, or in some cases tricked into thinking they will be doing different work in Thailand, not Myanmar.
The scammers look for workers with skills in the languages of those who are targeted for cyber-fraud, usually English and Chinese.
They are pressed into conducting online criminal activity, ranging from love scams known as "pig butchering" and crypto fraud, to money laundering and illegal gambling.

the VAST majority are in India..it needs to be shut down everywhere. Eastern European countries too.
I will not accept any calls from a number I don’t recognize. If it’s important, they’ll leave a message.
Texts and emails are deleted without opening.
Agreed.
These countries can never seem to grow or grow up or prosper.
And they prey on the weak....elderly westerners.
It’s enough.
You would be SICKENED if you hear how the Indian scammers threaten old people here with prison and other terrible things and the old people believe them.
I’ve seen videos on them and they’re disgusting.
Nigeria celebrates!!!!.......
So “Mary” will quit calling about my recent car accident?
Cambodia does this too - but it’s mostly Chinese gangsters who run them.
Until last year I would have agreed. I am currently in Thailand for the 3rd time in 13 months. Thai people are friendly, honest, hard working. I’m currently in Bangkok where the streets are safe and clean. I could walk down the street with 100 bills on me and nothing would happen. And as white affluent as I appear, nobody raises prices on me etc.
Meanwhile after a 4th visit to Mexico in 2018, I’ll never step foot in that hell ever again.
I would gladly live in Thailand
I ignore most of them and am content doing so. They opened a new so called corner store gas station....won’t shop there. I simply won’t do business with them.
Did you ever see the sun?
Way up the Irrawaddy.
OK, that got my curiosity up, but I'm not sure I want to look that up.
Tourism is one of Thailand’s ‘major income’ sources......they will protect that income source.....However it’s well kown Thailand has a fair amount of scams targeting tourists and women need to be very careful.

Unlike home, if you’re a dangerous criminal in Thailand, you are locked up long time. My gf is a prison employee and going to attend an international conference here for women’s prisons. She says the incarceration rate here is very high. One female prison here, has 8000 inmates!
One reason why the country is safe, is because the bad folks are locked up.
Genetically, Thai people are honest, dignified, peaceful patient and friendly. I vcannot speak highly enough of the place.
I've encountered attempted pig butchering. They send a random text as if to a wrong number by accident. Then if you respond they basically fall over themselves about what a wonderful person you are (regardless of what you said), and keep flattering you up the wazoo. The idea is to find someone lonely or in need of some affection and then shower them with praise. From there a "romance" quickly develops, which develops into a chance to earn quick money with some wonderful investing opportunity they claim to know about. They then leverage the romance to feed the target's sense of greed to get them to pour money into the claimed investment.
In short the target is the pig... who is getting butchered.
A long standing policy of mine.
Goes double now.
“More than 250 people from 20 nationalities who had been working in telecom fraud centres in Myanmar’s Karen State”
Why am I not surprised that it’s a bunch of KARENS doing this crap.
Thanks.
“In short the target is the pig... who is getting butchered.” — I figured that is who was going to get butchered!
