Sir Keir Starmer could visit Donald Trump 'as soon as next week': World leaders prepare to meet for the first time since US president returned to the White House

Sir Keir Starmer may visit Donald Trump 'as soon as next week' in what will be their first meeting since his re-election as US president.

The date of the consultation is yet to be confirmed - with Downing Street patiently waiting for a gap in the billionaire's busy schedule to become available.

But, with Parliament in recess from February 13, It seems possible Sir Keir may plan to fly out to Washington in the next few days, The Telegraph reports.

The trip comes at a critical time for transatlantic relations, with Trump threatening to impose tariffs on several countries, including the UK, and with his allies accusing the Labour government of restricting free speech online and failing to crack down on grooming gangs.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's recent decision to give away the Chagos Islands - where there is a joint US - UK military base - has sparked concern among Republicans.

Trump announced that a 25 per cent levy would be put on all imported steel and aluminium, including from the UK.

The US is the second-largest market for UK steel and it is thought Downing Street did not know about the tariff plans.

More in depth discussions about British imports have not yet begun, but officials are seeking a limited trade deal with the US covering priority exports from the UK. This will include pharmaceuticals and technology, it is reported.

Sir Keir is expected prioritise the subject of the defence and trade relationship between the UK and US when when he visits the American president.

It is thought the pair will discuss how both countries have responded to Gaza and Ukraine.

Sir Keir and Trump spent 45 minutes on the phone at the end of January - six days after the president returned to the White House.

It would be funny if Trump invites Elon Musk to the Oval Office while Sir Keir is visiting.

Should have Musk meet with him at the airport and discuss censorship issues with him before he is allowed to stay. Get an agreement on blocking the backdoor access on phones and communications.

After seeing what Chuck, Kent, and Harry have been getting up to, I can see why the Walses would want to hide out in Mustique.

Willy, I hope you kept your pilot's license up to date. You might need it.
