The party that claims to want to "defend democracy" has decided to abandon the struggle in New York.
New York state Democrats are going to pass a bill that allows Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul to delay scheduling special elections until November. Current law requires Hochul to schedule a special election 90 days after a vacancy is declared.
The nomination of former Rep. Elise Stefanik to be UN ambassador will create a vacancy in her deep red district once the Senate confirms her nomination. Once the bill passes (Democrats have large majorities in both Houses), Hochul could deny citizens of New York's 21st Congressional District any representation for an extra six months.
The move has profound national implications. Speaker of the House Rep. Mike Johnson will have one fewer vote to pass Trump's agenda. Currently, Johnson has a 218-215 majority with two vacancies, as well as Stefanik's seat once she's confirmed. In addition to Stefanik's seat, Florida's Mike Walz resigned to become Trump's national security advisor, and Rep. Matt Gaetz resigned when Trump nominated him for attorney general.
All three seats are expected to be filled by Republicans. But in the meantime, Speaker Johnson has a nightmare majority where he can't lose more than one GOP vote.
What profound reason are the New York Democrats giving to get Hochul to delay the special election?
Elections are too expensive, and New York needs to save money.

They’ve lost their funding source for the election and are panicking.
When the law doesn’t benefit you, just change it so it does.
Democracy is at stake for who?
Excellent point.
New York DemocRATs think they can have a war and not risk any casualties. Republicans have to make this very dangerous. Arrest them for their scandals. Arrest their activist judges. They won’t stop until they get splash back good and hard.
No funds have to find a way to steal another election
Elections are too expensive? That would apply if a Democrat seat were open, too, right? Sure, it would. Because if elections are put off for no good reason, that would amount to a threat to our democracy.
Always working the corners. Always changing the rules if you don’t like the rules, or just ignoring them. The will to power at all costs 24/7, and zero integrity
House could delay confirmation until one of those other special elections is held. Also...find a judge that could order an election under the old law
“When the law doesn’t benefit you, just change it so it does.”
Happens all the time. The GOP majority legislature in Kentucky changed the law to prevent the Democrat governor from appointing a Democrat to replace a Republican US Senator (and vis versa) in case McConnell passes on.
UN Ambassador is a pretty meaningless position. Not worth giving up a House seat with such a narrow majority. She should just stay in Congress.
“Find a judge”, is in itself a bold illustration of our rot and decay as a society if that’s a remedy.

I grew up in this district, and I wouldn’t call it “deep red.” In 2009, Obama picked John McHugh-R for a cabinet slot, and the special election to replace him led to a Dem winning the seat (result of the infamous Dede Scozzafava debacle). The district then re-elected him, even though he was the first Dem to hold the seat in 100 years. Stefanik won the seat when the Dem didn’t seek re-election in 2014. Keeping this seat in the R column is not a slam dunk by any means.
The NY Demonicrats need more time for them and Traitorhochul to give aid and comfort to the domestic and foreign enemies of the United States.
Johnson could appoint her temporary majority whip with the power to remove reps from committees for not following leadership on votes. The dems will be griping to have her replaced quickly if they lose the ability to poach off RINO votes.

She has not resigned yet. Let her stay in her position and an interim ambassador appointed.
Hold the election on schedule—”90 days after the vacancy is declared”.
Stop Dim Party meddling in our democracy!
Trump should wait until January 2027 to give this cushy gig to Stefanik.
She'll have to take one for the team and stay in Congress.
Trump can name an acting UN Ambassador in the meantime.
He can tell the Democrats that he had no choice but to do this.
