Migrant children in Tennessee could soon face a major barrier to education as Republican lawmakers push a bill that would allow public schools to deny enrollment to undocumented students.
Why It Matters Tennessee is among an increasing number of Republican states looking to enact bills intended to help Trump's hard-line immigration agenda.
The 1982 Supreme Court decision in Plyler v. Doe guaranteed children of families living in the country unlawfully the right to attend public schools. In a 5-4 ruling, the court determined it was unconstitutional to deny children an education based on their immigration status. However, some conservative lawmakers have questioned whether immigrants without legal residency should retain this right.
Immigration was a key element of President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign and helped Republicans sweep to power on a national level. While large majorities of both Democrats and Republicans agree that the immigration system is broken, as indicated in a recent New York Times/Ipsos poll, Americans disagree on how policies such as deportations should be carried out.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Why should our taxes support people who are not citizens?
Immigrants would not be affected.
They are here legally.
ILLEGALS ALIENS would be the ones affected.
Would using the correct terms break these idiots jaw or something?
We Tennesseans can not afford this anymore. Simple as that.
Biden and the cartels have dumped these criminals at small airports in the middle of the night here in TN. We don’t want them, and I don’t want to pay for their education.
Educating illegal aliens is an unfunded mandate on the states, and local government. If SCOTUS thinks the children of illegal immigrants are entitled to an education, then the feds need to pay for it. Maybe if the states must pay for them, they could put them in special schools and make it easier to deport their parents?
And can’t speak English, momma and grandma come in all in a dither demanding a translator and all kinds of rights for their kid......
If you and your family are here illegally, tough. Go home.
I’ll bet there are lots of empty classrooms for the kids in Mexico. And there they won’t be forced to learn a second language.
Newsweek is using these ridiculous heads on all their articles: “Why It Matters”
Hmmm...maybe because America will now be for AMERICANS, not mooching illegals? We’ll save a sh!tload of money.
In 1982 when the court made the decision it lean left.
Conservative Justices: Warren Burger, William Rehnquist, Sandra Day O’Connor, and Lewis F. Powell Jr.
Moderate to Liberal Justices: William J. Brennan Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Harry Blackmun, John Paul Stevens, and Byron White.
That would be illegal alien children (not “migrant children”) being denied what they have no right to in the first place. Illegal aliens ie. Criminals come here to steal benefits that hard working taxpayers paid for. F them and f their ninos and ninas. Mel families together- deport them together
“For every person that receives without working another person works without receiving. The government cannot give anything to anyone without first takeing it from someone else.” Adrian Rogers
It would be interesting to know how much money USAID has
poured into building schools and such in Mexico etc.
And...?
Oops almost forgot they should be sent back to their country to get a BETTER education than they would get in our awful government schools.
Going to school ???
Why aren’t they on a plane back to their own country by now?
“And can’t speak English, momma and grandma come in all in a dither demanding a translator and all kinds of rights for their kid......”
My mother was a child of immigrants. All her parents’ children learned English in grades 1 through 8. The family was not provided a translator.
Quick, run back to your home country where you can get a good education.
As our Florida governor pointed out “Undocumented” and “Illegal” are not the same thing. Not being able to produce required paperwork should be a fairly obtainable for someone here legally. So it could just be a minor oversight. If someone is here illegally there is much more to it than not having some paperwork.
“...the court determined it was unconstitutional to deny children an education based on their immigration status.”
My question “Do illegal immigrants even have status?”
