Washington:

President Donald Trump on Friday raged against eco-friendly paper straws promoted by his predecessor Joe Biden, and pledged that the United States would return to using plastic ones.

"I will be signing an Executive Order next week ending the ridiculous Biden push for Paper Straws, which don't work. BACK TO PLASTIC!" Trump said on social media.

Democrat Biden had announced a target to eliminate single-used plastic utensils like drinking straws by 2035 in government departments.

Paper straws are useless, try drinking a thick milkshake, with a paper straw.

Nitpicking? Why worry about plastic straws when thousands of “disposable” diapers hit the landfills every day.

Actually, as a kid in the '50s, I used to love drinking a chocolate malt with a paper straw.

Didn’t they move to plastic because the paper straws were killing the trees? So now the plastic straws are non biodegradable and they want to oscillate back to paper. These people are useless.

The fun was nipping off the end of the paper cover and blowing the paper across the room.

aka..."Fun in the Cafeteria"

I hate paper staws too but I personally believe plastics, specifically micro-plastics, are a serious hazard.

When I was a kid it seemed like the paper straws were dipped in wax and did work unless they stayed in liquid for a long time. Brown paper grocery bags were indestructible too, made great book covers.

Now they can’t seem to make decent paper straws or paper grocery bags that don’t rip when you touch them.

What issue is this? I grew up in the sixties; we used paper straws coated in wax. Real milkshakes made with real ice cream require a spoon until they melt sufficiently to finish off with a straw. I do not recall paper/wax straws ever being a problem. I prefer paper/wax straws. My wife throws them in her compost pile. I am not some eco-nut, but limited use of plastics makes sense, especially as we learn more about the effects of micro-plastics.

Plastic is not better; it is cheaper. This does sound like a bone being tossed to a donor. With everything else going on, this is a BS EO. This could have been done with a little less fanfare. It makes sense if Trump is saying the Fed does not need to be financially involved in this issue let the States decide between paper or plastic. Let them pay to enforce it.

I hate the paper straws too, but the amount of plastic straws that end up in our waterways is astounding!

As nice as these EO's are, it would be nice to see this country go back to the American form of government, where a bill passes both houses of Congress and then has to be signed by the President before it becomes law.

Another step in that direction would be an annual budget and no Continuing Resolutions. Almost like having grown-ups in charge.

It’s not about the straws, it’s about the self-righteous, self-congratulatory, virtue signaling of progressives. They are focused on straws and gender neutral bathrooms but not on preventing wildfires, cleaning out litter and unsanitary homeless encampments, fentanyl…you get the drift.
