A key safety system was turned off in a US army helicopter when it crashed into an American Airlines flight last week, killing 67 people.
Ted Cruz, the chairman of the Senate commerce committee, told reporters that the Black Hawk helicopter had switched off an advanced surveillance technology known as automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B).
“This was a training mission, so there was no compelling national security reason for ADS-B to be turned off,” Mr Cruz said on Thursday, following a briefing from federal transport bodies.

IF I were to commit suicide, I’d turn that off to not alarm the others.

The Malaysian Airlines pilot of Flight 370 who flew his passenger plane off to parts unknown did a similar thing to his plane.
D’oh!
Was it deliberately flying at the wrong altitude?

Big yawn. I can remember when a missile strike was reported as a center fuel tank explosion.
Would you also jump altitude 100 feet in four seconds or less 30 seconds before the crash to perhaps disorientate two passengers?
What does that system do?
I look at Flightradar24 regularly. The only aircraft I have seen fly around my house that did not show up on Flightradar24 are Blackhawk helicopters. One day 3 in formation flew directly over my house at around 1000 feet (actually rattled the windows). They did not show up on Flightradar24. I always thought that was weird.
I’m hoping the days of gubmint cover-ups are over.
I’m not a Cruz fan, but he did the right thing putting this information out in the public.
Kinda sad it takes the UK Telegraph to report it.
This news deserves more attention.
That's the plan and I'd stick to it.
I was wondering about this! I am a pilot. A relatively newer FAA required instrument that works through aircraft transponder information is called Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS). This instrument makes me feel like I am ‘cheating’ because it shows all traffic within a my immediate airspace. Had I been in the place of that helo, my TCAS warning would have sounded off within 1mile of the jet.
Benefits
ADS-B provides many benefits to both pilots and air traffic control that improve both the safety and efficiency of flight.[16][17]
When using an ADS-B In system, a pilot is able to view traffic information about surrounding aircraft if those aircraft are equipped with ADS-B Out. This information includes altitude, heading, speed, and distance to the aircraft. In addition to receiving position reports from ADS-B Out participants, in the US, TIS-B can provide position reports on non-ADS-B Out-equipped aircraft if suitable ground equipment and ground radar exist. ADS-R re-transmits ADS-B position reports between UAT and 1090 MHz frequency bands.
Safety
Situational awareness
ADS-B makes flying significantly safer for the aviation community by providing pilots with improved situational awareness. Pilots in an ADS-B In equipped cockpit will have the ability to see, on their in-cockpit flight display, other traffic operating in the airspace and have access to clear and detailed weather information. They will also be able to receive pertinent updates ranging from temporary flight restrictions to runway closings.
ADS-B simply transmits a brief message once a second giving an aircraft’s position and identification. It’s a relativity new innovation. It’s a line of sight signal, probably readable sixty miles away (depending on the size of your receiving antenna). It uses the same frequency and signal format as air traffic control beacon replies, and is incorporated into aircraft transponders.
It’s much more a “nice to have” than essential safety equipment. The military absolutely hates it. ATC does not depend on it. It is easy to spoof, by the way, though the FAA is looking at ways of detecting spoofing. I do not know if the military is looking at ways to spoof or detect spoofing, but if not, why not?
Correct me if I’m wrong- wasn’t a liberal Biden-supporting lesbian DEI pilot flying the helo?
Thanks

I had a helo buzz my place two years ago to check out my tomato garden (I had 50 plants at the time). He stayed there and hovered directly over me and we stared at each other for a while. If I had it to do over, I’d signal him to come down (I have a level spot that would work) but I’m sure he would decline.
