Last week, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) sent an ominous offer to millions of federal employees.
In an email titled “Fork in the Road,” these workers were given the chance to continue in their roles and work in the office five days a week, or submit their resignation by Feb. 6 and leave their jobs while collecting a paycheck through September.
It’s unclear if Trump has the legal authority to require all federal employees to return to the office full time, and if he can even make the resignation offer—labor unions filed a lawsuit this week challenging the move. But the past few days have been fraught for millions of employees trying to navigate a confusing offer that will have a massive impact on their careers and the U.S. government writ large.
Three federal workers that Fortune spoke with, who prefer to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, say they’re frightened and disoriented by the turn of events. And they’re deeply insulted by how their jobs have been denigrated by the president of the United States.

I am loving their lamentations.
Oh, the poor bureaucrat!

I’m a one issue voter. I vote for whatever brings the most leftist tears.
It may be wrong, but I could smile for the complete duration of a modern-day Trail of Tears.
If they were working from home, AI is taking their place anyway.
7 1/2 months of continued paychecks after resigning? Sweet deal!
These same bureaucrats smugly told us all to just “work from home” and “learn to code”.
“’ heartbreak and fury “
So Fortune magazine is just another leftist rag. They state Trump may not have the authority to a require return to the office order. I call BS but they will get a DC Judge to agree no doubt.
Boo fricking hoo!
LEARN TO CODE
Laughing my azz off at the lovely irony.
We couldn’t care less. We only care about our nation at this point. Enough of the BS.
Welcome to the real world. Gov worker have taken advantage of taxpayers for decades. No fear of termination, great raises and perks, no show, no work jobs, all of it.
the gig is up. Get to work, or get out.

I wonder how long until Fortune’s name shows up in the DOGE reports.
“millions of employees trying to navigate a confusing offer “
It’s one of the least confusing, and most cogent, offers I’ve ever heard. Are they really that stupid?
I hear ya. I’ve been thinking about changing my tagline for a while, but ... nah
I tried to get to the bottom of a tax situation in 2022. It took me hours on hold just to talk to an IRS representative and when I finally connected with someone, I was passed along to another rep. I ended up with 3 different explanations about my situation from 3 different reps. I heard dogs barking in the background and children crying in a different room. They were clearly working from home and they were all uninformed nitwits with apparently no oversight. I’m sure it hasn’t improved since the pandemic either. If my experience was the norm, our federal bureaucracies are in major trouble.
Put on your big-boy pants, people. Welcome to corporate America. While your career is floating along in a job with near zero accountability, everyone in the real world has to produce, or else.
Guess what? You are facing the “or else”. If you have a job where you have to work hard and you have a lot to do, don’t worry.
But, if you don’t have to work hard, the free ride is coming to an end.
