Elon Musk, who is heading Donald Trump’s efforts to shrink the federal government, has said they are working to shut down the foreign aid agency USAid, in a social media discussion on X early on Monday.
The conversation, which included former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and Republican senator Joni Ernst and Mike Lee, began with Musk saying they were working to shut down the United States Agency for International Development (USAid).
“It’s beyond repair,” Musk said, adding that Trump agreed it should be shut down.
On Sunday, Reuters reported the Trump administration removed two top security officials at USAid during the weekend after they tried to stop representatives from billionaire Musk’s so-called “department of government efficiency”, or Doge, from gaining access to restricted parts of the building, three sources said.
USAid is the world’s largest single donor. In fiscal year 2023, the US disbursed $72bn of assistance worldwide on everything from women’s health in conflict zones to access to clean water, HIV/Aids treatments, energy security and anti-corruption work. It provided 42% of all humanitarian aid tracked by the United Nations in 2024.
The website of USAid appeared to still be offline on Saturday and some users could not access it on Sunday. USAid has a staff of more than 10,000 people.
Speaking more broadly about cutting US expenses and fraud, Musk estimated the Trump administration can cut $1tn from the US deficit next year. Musk did not offer any evidence to support his fraud claim or explain how he reached the amount of $1tn.
He asserted, for example, that “professional foreign fraud rings” are stealing vast sums by masquerading as or creating fake digital US citizens.

I see Reuters has not “offered any evidence” that the article they wrote is not propaganda written as willful disinformation.
Sometimes , you just gotta burn it all down , Man!
So many money laundries so little time.
It’s just another rat money laundering op.
“Musk did not offer any evidence to support his fraud claim or explain how he reached the amount of $1tn.”
How about sending Aid to US families?
why not spend those billions rebuilding small towns all across America?
How about spending those billions to bring in high speed internet to our rural areas?
I have no issue in theory with helping others in the world, but we FIRST have to help our own citizens!
No parent would let their child starve while bagging up groceries to help feed the poor!
You take care of your own FIRST, and then once they are ok, then and only then do you consider helping strangers a world away!
Use thousand dollar bills and you’ll be close to a good start.
L
10,000 USAID employees to distribute $72 Billion a year ?
72 BILLION!
Just imagine if instead of sending 72 billion to other countries to help THEIR people, we spent that to help OUR people!
you could give 720 small towns in America 100 MILLION dollars to rebuild infrastructure etc!!!!
million dollar bills
HOORAY Elon! Money so better spent at home.
“It’s just another rat money laundering op.”
Not just democrats. It is VERY bipartisan. Whether they share the whole truth or not remains to be seen, But republican congress critters are just as deep in this theft. It has been going on for decades and both parties are all in for what they can get out of ALL government disbursements.
I second his vote
Kill It!
Plus the salaries of 10,000 people to give it all away
I always see conflicting reports about sorts of things such as this.
I’m terrified that 4 years are going to go by and in those four years the grand total of ABC agencies that will have been abolished will reach a grand total of:
Zero
If you follow the money, you will find those kickbacks to people in DC somewhere
Some fed employees have vowed not to take the buy out and to keep on working. This is what stops it:
“According to AP, USAID staffers said they ‘also tracked more than 600 employees who reported being locked out of the agency’s computer systems overnight.’”
