...Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is keeping the door open to conditioning California disaster aid on the state enacting voter identification laws, days after President Trump said he wanted to link the two priorities....

...The Speaker went on to lament California’s track record of counting ballots at a slower pace than other states. A handful of House races in the Golden State were the last elections to be called in November. ...

Spin by propagandists at The Hill. More than a handful, weeks later and they went to the rats as always.

When Congressional elections are super-close, their results should break about 50-50 for each party. In the case of California it was 90-10, or maybe 100-0. Without a doubt some ‘really cute’ stuff is going on there.

Congress cannot regulate the method by which California appoints its Electors for President and Vice President. That is a reserved power of the State Legislature.

However.

Article I §4 says "The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations"

So. Congress may, at any time (like now), ALTER THE MANNER of holding elections for Senators and Representatives, in California and everywhere else (although I believe it would require 50 separate laws)..

Congress could require proof of citizenship. Congress could require foolproof Federal voter ID. Congress could, and should, forbid early voting for Senators and Representatives. Congress could require enumeration of any votes for Senator or Representative be completed by midnight on the day appointed for casting of such votes. Congress could require submission of all tallies of votes for this purpose to be submitted to a central location prescribed by Congress by sunrise on the day after Election Day.

This would all be consistent with Congress's power to alter the manner by which California conducts elections for Senators and Representatives - it's right in Article I section 4.

Based on this, could Congress require Voter ID in all states for the Federal part of elections, not the local ones?

We also need purple dye on fingers, like was done in Iraq a few years ago.

You are absolutely correct in that California at least has a number of shortcomings in their election process that should be the subject of national requirements established by Congress.
Verification of citizenship to register.
Regular clean up process for the voter rolls to identify and delete people who have moved.
Timeliness of votes that can be counted to stop the ever longer counting and at least creating suspicions about the process, especially since one party consistently comes from behind to win from the final votes counted.

Let’s hope that by 2030 the over than 2 million illegals that have been included in California census population will be gone, probably could eliminate 4 to 5 seats in Congress for CA.

Yes. Congress has regulated federal elections in the past.

If we can get nationwide voter ID, the illegals become less important to them.

How does a state implement purple dye on fingers for mail-in ballots?

Why was Kalifornee the last state to count/record votes up mid December 2024?

Voter ID may or may not make it into law for every state and jurisdiction, but the USA has NEVER had a 1-day federal election. That’s why presidents weren’t inaugurated until March until the 1930’s.

There’s simply no way to count 175,000,000 ballots, each with multiple elections, on one day. That also doesn’t account for military and others abroad who are surely entitled to vote just as we are.

If you want a “one day election,” we won’t get there without electronic ballots and counting. Even then, there will be ballots not counted on election day for various reasons.

All the “one day” election calls you remember weren’t official. They were just news organization projections based on exit polling.

Mainly because of gerrymandering, there are no “50-50” districts in California. There are a lot of 60/40 and 70/30 districts in the state, but most of them favor Democrats.

How about, no mail in ballots except for active Military deployed abroad?

We need to save innocent trees from the senseless slaughter needed for all the excess mailed ballots.

And, death penalty for perjury, of course, just like in Old Testament days. Really effective, I hear.

They need to do the same in every blue state.
Oregon would turn red!
No mail-n voting either.

Sorry this is just wrong and will not survive a court challenge. If California has met the criteria set out in the law and related regulations for requesting and receiving disaster aid it can not be denied based on failure to meet a demand that has nothing to do with that aid.
