Donald Trump warned 'Britain first in line for Greenland' after takeover plot

The new US President wants to take over the mineral-rich island as its rapidly melting ice sheets open it up to mining. Trump declared over the weekend “I think we’re going to have it” following what sources described as a “fiery phone call” with the prime minister of its current owner Denmark.

But should Denmark decide to flog it off the UK should get first chance to snap it up, political chiefs said.

Britain has a 108-year-old “right-to-buy” clause that puts it in poll position to acquire the island. According to the last Danish minister for the Arctic island Tom Høyem - Denmark’s representative in Greenland from 1982 to 1987 – the undertaking dated from 1917 when America first failed in a bid to buy the island.

It looks like the UK is looking to get its teeth kicked in again by the good old US of A.

That was when the UK was known as the "British Empire".

Now it's a small island in the North Sea known for crappy food and inbred Royals.

That was before the UK was taken over by the desert rats from the middle east. No deal.

Where do these journalists get their training on homonyms?

I'm pretty sure that should be "pole" position, a term borrowed from racing, indicating the preferred starting position for a race.

There are a lot of good people in the UK. Don't confuse them with their inbred Overlords.

,,, build a golf course with a sixty level hotel on it for starters. Clear a glacier to do it. China’s created islands in the South China Sea and they’re building roads and buildings in Bhutan and nobody is challenging them, so it must be OK. Raft up a few sinister looking Los Angeles class subs at Nuuk’s dock and give it a go.

The UK is a dying nation... nearly 3rd world economy. They can’t protect Greenland any more than Denmark can.

If the UK has a "right to buy" option, President Trump should buy that option.

Some British may instead prefer taking Greenland’s place as a dangling participle of Denmark.

If DJT is serious here he’d be wise to negotiate quietly with Denmark and the people of Greenland.

Hey, if two words sound the same, or even sort of the same, they must mean the same thing, right? That seems to be what a lot of journalists think these days.

The UK can barely project power. Without US support and military assistance it would've lost the Falkland War to Argentina. That was 42 years ago when Britain still had a navy. Sad to say but the Kingdom of Denmark is getting desperate if they are trying to rely on the UK.

Here's a simple table comparing the military strength of the United States and the United Kingdom based on key factors:

CategoryUnited StatesUnited Kingdom
Active Personnel1.3 million150,000
Reserve Personnel811,00080,000
Total Defense Budget$858 billion (2023 estimate)$68 billion (2023 estimate)
Tanks6,000+227
Armored Vehicles40,000+4,000+
Combat Aircraft2,500+700+
Naval Ships490+80+
Aircraft Carriers112
Submarines70+11
Nuclear Warheads5,500 (estimated)225 (estimated)
Total Land Area9.8 million km²243,610 km²

These numbers represent general strength and can fluctuate over time with new procurements, budget changes, or military shifts. The U.S. military is far larger and more technologically advanced overall, while the UK’s military is more specialized, with a focus on global reach and alliances.
