The Communist Who Convinced Jimmy Carter to Give Away the Panama Canal
American Thinker ^ | Jerome Corsi

Posted on 01/26/2025 2:41:24 AM PST by RoosterRedux

The late Jimmy Carter didn’t come up spontaneously with the idea of giving away the Panama Canal, which America spent blood and gold on and which is an essential part of its national security. Instead, he had Robert A. Pastor, a communist, whispering in his ear.

A globalist who desired to merge incrementally the U.S., Mexico, and Canada into a “North American Union” (NAU) along the model of the European Union, Pastor’s intellectual development was rooted in Marxism. Pastor played an instrumental role in the Carter administration’s decision to relinquish control of the Panama Canal.

...

In what appears to have been his first job after being a teaching assistant graduate student while getting his Ph.D. at Harvard University’s Department of Government, Robert A. Pastor signed on to be the Executive Director of the Linowitz Commission.

...

One of the Linowitz Commission’s primary recommendations was that the United States should give the Panama Canal to Panama.

...

After completing this assignment as Executive Director of the Linowitz Commission, Pastor signed on with the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS).

...

At IPS, Pastor participated in the Ad Hoc Working Group on Latin America, which produced a 1977 report entitled “The Southern Connection: Recommendations for a New Approach to Inter-American Relations.”5/ This paper found that the official presumption of U.S. superiority in Latin America was “morally reprehensible.” The IPS paper argued that human rights problems in Latin America were a direct result of our “virulent anticommunism” and “national development based on free play of market forces.”

The IPS solution argued for the U.S. to abandon our anti-communist allies in Latin America in favor of supporting “ideological pluralism,”[...] The IPS political agenda promoted an anti-American “Third Worldism” and the “self-flagellation” characteristic of Carter’s foreign policy—an agenda [...] along the lines of Castro’s Cuba...

So much of our problems today have their roots in Jimmy Cahtuh’s stupid,evil-rewarding policies:panama canal giveway, greenlighting Khomeni and punishing the Shah, accepting Cuba’s criminals and others then giving them unearned welfare, etc.

Conmen cannot con you, unless you are greedy.
Carter was not conned. He was aligned with this vision.

I grew up in South Georgia, about 90 miles SE of Plains. Jimmuh was well-known around here as a fool. He thought he was being softhearted when he was actually being softheaded.

Per the New York Slimes:

Robert Pastor, 66, Dies; Guided Panama Treaty for Carter

By Douglas Martin

Jan. 14, 2014

He died of colon cancer.

See the wiki entry:

He married into the political elite . He was NOT a patriot.

Conmen cannot con you, unless you are greedy.

I don't think that's true.

Gullibility is a much bigger factor than greed because it reflects a person's tendency to trust without critical thinking and skepticism. A conman thrives on manipulating trust.

Greed might increase the likelihood of falling for certain scams, but gullibility applies across the board—it’s the foundation of a conman’s success.

Greed implies more than wealth and power.
It can be anything that you want unearned.

Liberals are greedy in their desire for a better world, so they’ve been convinced to spend trillions towards that goal.

Being gullible is definitely part of that.

I bet anyone $10,000 that, at the time, they claimed by giving the Panama Canal back to Panama, it would reduce illegal immigration.

Pastor also a member of “Peace Corps,” and many of them decided that the only remedy to “3rd world suffering” was to dismantle “Imperialist America” from within.

Carter was convinced of that as well as Pastor,IMHO. Not patriots, either of them.

So we give the Panama Canal “back” to Panama” , as it was theirs in the first place.

Sick logic of twisted politicians who were laboring under a delusion that American Expansionism was just bad. Its not bad at all, and literally has brought stone aged societies into a flourishing, peaceful, modern era, replete with medicine, healthy food , surplus generating economies.

People who think like Carter and Pastor need to go and pound sand.

I have familiarity in greed, but not its fulfillment.

One good thing Jimmy Carter did was convince my parents to leave the Democratic party. I think Carter was the beginning of a cascading series of events that has culminated in Trump getting elected. Carter certainly gave us Reagan.

I spent much of my career in NYC. I have seen greed become as powerful to some people as drug addiction.

Greed seems to prey on human insecurity.

I think it was Warren Buffet who said, “ Invest in companies an idiot can run, because eventually one will.”. The Founders designed a country an idiot can’t destroy. Though a bunch of them have tried.

Was Jimmy Carter a fool, or was that just the way he softened the responses of the people who realized he was aiding every communist and anti-American there was? How many conservatives were calling for him out as a sadistic left-wing terrorist? None, they all thought he supported the PLO, the narco-terrorists, the abortion mills and the brutal communist regimes because he simply naively misinterpreted Christ. He could give a master class to Antipope Francis.
