Trump Freezes Department of Energy’s $50 Billion Budget

In a sweeping move that halts billions in spending, President Trump’s administration has frozen the Department of Energy's (DOE) activities pending a comprehensive review of its alignment with his priorities. According to a memo from acting Energy Secretary Ingrid Kolb, the freeze affects grants, loans, procurement, studies, and even personnel decisions, effectively bringing the agency’s $50 billion budget to a standstill.

Beyond bureaucratic tinkering, the halt is a direct shot at dismantling Biden-era climate policies. The DOE’s Loan Programs Office, holding $41.2 billion in conditional commitments to energy technology companies, now finds its purse strings tightly cinched…

…The order mirrors an earlier Trump directive freezing funds tied to Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act and a bipartisan infrastructure law, both of which allocated billions for clean energy initiatives. Trump, who has championed fossil fuels as a cornerstone of his energy policy, has made it clear that climate-focused spending is no longer a federal priority.

The Interior Department issued a similar freeze on wind and solar project leases on federal lands and waters.

If it has to be spent on energy projects, how about developing a modular thorium reactor?

how about developing a modular thorium reactor?

We agree, but that would require similar actions with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in order to speed up the process that is presently so slow that anything Nuc is virtually at a standstill despite numerous “Labs” intent on the effort.

IOW the approval process is virtually non existant.

That would make the AI computer banks hum merrily along.

Recent studies have found that Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) can be safely installed and operated at brownfield sites that may not meet the more stringent zoning requirements for conventional NPP...

These are the types of things that are perhaps purposely kept from the public in order to avoid accountability. I’m sure they think nobody would ever find out.

Well throw a US ??? In front of it and watch your money bend over and kiss its ass good by. The DOE is a bureaucratic bunch of bull💩 that’s wasted money, since the SL-1 incident. All hat and no cattle. I worked for them for over 30 years DOD too. If the government runs it , it sucks. Thank God Hegseth will run DOD. We need someone who wants to kill people and break things. DJT is on the case. 🙏

Twenty years ago Saudi Arabia was sounding like they wanted to introduce thorium reactors throughout the kingdom. Then the issue died. I wonder why?

Yeah they might need the money if their little pet projects get defunded and there is layoffs. The DOE has been preaching small reactors for years. All talk. The regulations they push stops it all. They talk, the tax payer pays. Time to bend them over and introduce them to their ankles. IMO
