I don't know if you know it yet but "reasoning", semi-intelligent (and maybe fully-intelligent) Artificial Intelligence is right around the corner.
Once this model is successfully "reasoning" it will put nearly every white-collar job at risk of being replaced by an AI. The AI can work 24 hours a day. 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It will do so at a very small cost, and at some point within this decade (with initial models being available in the next year or two), will do those jobs better, faster, with no breaks and no demands for wages.
Among other concerns, this will make the entire argument about importing cheaper foreign labor completely moot, at least in the knowledge arena of work. Millions of people in America will be impacted, including lawyers, doctors, computer professionals, engineers of every type, content writers, you name it.
Some people will say that this is going to be another case of "garbage in, garbage out", and this is absolutely true for the early models of Artificial Intelligence, namely Large Language Models such as ChatGPT 1 through 4. Those current models are merely presenting summaries of all it can read on the internet. In some ways, it is merely a clever plagiarist.
Yet, progress is being made, successful progress, at true "reasoning" AI. At some point in the near future -- within this decade -- efforts at creating Artificial General Intelligence will be realized. At that point, all bets are off.
This will greatly lower the costs of living in many arenas. Law, medicine, engineering of every kind, will all become far cheaper. However, it will also render many current professionals obsolete, and wages will be cut or those workers will be without jobs altogether. It will also greatly lower the amount of tax money the government will get. Without wages, where will tax money come from?
This will likely be the biggest change in the human condition in our entire history. It will be more impactful than the industrial revolution of 1910 to 2025. We will have to rethink nearly every economic model we have set up. How will people earn? What about the crisis of not having any purpose any more?
These are huge issues. These issues will emerge starting late this year until maybe two to five years from now.
Many people are concerned with the wage-lowering impact of cheaper foreign labor. I hold that this issue will become obsolete within ten years or much less. I suggest everyone start reading about AI and its impact on white-collar workers. That is a far greater threat (and in some ways perhaps opportunity?) than cheaper foreign labor. What can be cheaper than AI powering jobs and causing complete collapse of entire professional arenas?
We may have to rethink everything in our society. This could be utopia, or this could be Armageddon.

WHERE are these robot women that you promised me?
C’mon man!!!
No nose rings or grotesque tattoos please... :)
I put those images in the title to make the post stand out.
While robot women are definitely coming, this issue is far more important. How will you make a living?
People deeply misunderstand just what LLMs are capable of.
They are, in essence, a sophisticated auto-suggest. They have no understanding of the subject under discussion and have no ability to judge whether their answer makes any sense.
Glad I taught my kids some USEFUL skills.
So LLM's are no threat. What is coming, starting late this year, is.
I'm glad too. What are those skills?
I will send out my 3 robot-women-wives on rotating shifts
If they’re flipping burgers @$20/hr we should be okay
Guess I’ll have to buy oil and keep some recharging packs at the ready
It’s my plan. Right now, anyways.
And they would need to be plugged in all sorts of hardware physically and to software via APIs that are all coordinated to make the big, scary end result happen. Itโs possible, but will take loads of support engineers to keep it all running. AI is a good tool.
Pretty much all the skills needed to build a house, other than detailed carpentry and running steel gas lines. Also auto and some ac repair.
Scary thought you’re posting. If we need to design a new aircraft carrier, enter some specs and 5 seconds later you have a complete design. The people who actually build the boat are the ones that will have jobs.
Perhaps you are right. I did mention, in this article, that it might be an opportunity. I wrote elsewhere, this:
"Reasoning" Artificial Intelligence is just around the corner. I've been giving thought to possible career paths in this environment.
AI will be producing code, shortly, to address business needs based on a prompt. One cannot be sure the code will meet those business needs.
Enter the AI Code Auditor.
This individual will assess the code to determine if it meets the needs of the business partners. They will refine the business prompt to ensure the code generated meets those needs. They will inspect the code to ensure proper coding standards and enterprise concerns (such as security) are satisfied.
Another possible career with the advent of "reasoning" AI:
An Artificial Intelligence Curator.
This individual would be someone who guides AI to reason in ways that there is a human need. A silly example:
AI is told "I wish to cut improve profits in the company". AI finds that committing fraud, collecting money without producing results, and failing to pay bills will drastically improve profits. An AI Curator would guide the AI away from such counterproductive conclusions and instead guide it to more ethical and productive methods.
Smart dad. Well done.
Scary thought youโre posting. If we need to design a new aircraft carrier, enter some specs and 5 seconds later you have a complete design. The people who actually build the boat are the ones that will have jobs.
Will they though? Take a look at this video clip.
That was six months ago. Robotics is becoming extremely sophisticated at a rapid pace.
If/when the quantum computing becomes an actual usable product, it seems from my increasingly archaic viewpoint that the only means to program them will be through the by-then quite mature AI systems, iow, humans won’t be able to build useful programs / OSes for QC.
You are correct. Quantum computing is something that completely baffles me, and I’ve been in the computing industry for my entire lifetime. I also like to think I’m somewhat intelligent, but the concepts are — so far — beyond my understanding.
Here is a good structured informative article on AI and reasoning.
Reasoning in AI: Can AI Actually Think and Reason Like Humans?
By Dr. Nivash Jeevanandam
Artificial intelligence (AI) uses algorithms to analyze data, identify patterns, and make decisions based on those patterns.
AI reasoning can involve deductive, inductive, and other types of reasoning.
Types of reasoning in AI
Deductive reasoning Uses known information to draw specific conclusions. For example, if \(a=b\) and \(b=c\), then \(a=c\).
Inductive reasoning Uses specific facts to draw general conclusions. For example, if you’ve only seen white cats, you might conclude that all cats are white.
Abductive reasoning Uses observations to find the most likely explanation or conclusion. For example, if you see grass covered in dew, you might conclude that it’s dewy outside.
Common sense reasoning Uses informal reasoning based on life experiences. For example, you might not touch a hot stove to avoid getting burned.
How AI systems learn
AI systems learn from data by identifying patterns and relationships.
AI systems use algorithms to analyze data and make decisions.
AI systems can adapt and improve their performance over time. How AI systems reason
AI systems can use logical reasoning to solve problems.
AI systems can use causality to make decisions based on cause-and-effect relationships.
AI systems can use contextuality to evaluate data in its broader context.
