An annual study published this week by Randstad, the world's largest employment agency, found that for the first time in the survey’s more than two-decade history, workers are prioritizing “work-life balance” over pay when it comes to choosing the right job.
Almost half—or 45%—of the more than 26,000 respondents said that they had already campaigned for better conditions at work. Some 44% said that they had at some point even gone so far as to quit their job because of what they deemed to be a toxic work environment.

A bad boss can turn any job into a nightmare—and a good boss can make even the most challenging job worth the effort.
Pay cannot make up for that difference.
A job that may demand 80 hour weeks, and frequent travel, had better pay AT LEAST twice as much as one that’s straight 9-5. Preferably 3-4 times as much.
BS. Pay has always been a large factor for me but so has type of work and demand.
What you have now is millennials that are happy to take less pay so they can work less and want that as a requirement
Any longer and people are going to leave.
I pay as well as I can but mostly I just treat my employees like people. People I am moderately fond of. It seems to work.
There’s an old saying in show business: “Never chase talent with money.”
In my career I had the full range from outstanding bosses to awful ones.
What the outstanding bosses had going for them:
—They always had my back—no matter how tough the situation and no matter how much heat they took from their superiors
—They always told me the truth and the whole truth about anything I needed to know to do my job
—They always made sure I had excellent training for any task required of me
—They always told me the truth and the whole truth about what I did well and what I needed to do to get better
—They did not pry into my personal life
—They had clear measurable goals—so I could be confident that I could see how well I was doing at any point in time
—They did not play favorites. Everyone was treated the same
The bad bosses flunked some or all of these.
I know individuals whose last day in New York City was 9/11/2001 - not because of the attacks but because of the brutal slap in the face by the reality that New York City and Federal "professionals" did spit to deal with such emergencies despite the near-successful attempt to destroy one of the towers not eight years earlier.
I also know individuals whose last day in a Democrat dump was their first day. They were on their way to a job interview when they saw someone brutally assaulted by some local creature. The individual never went to the job interview but simply left the dump, never to return.
I also know several individuals who've directed headhunters to never bother them again with job offers in such places as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland OR, Chicago, or New York City. There is no amount of money these high earners would take to go near such toilets.
“Heck, yes — I play favorites. The people who habitually go above and beyond the call of duty are always going to be treated better than anyone else here.”
Well, Hollywood is different. They chase actors with trafficked children. They force actresses with a casting couch.
I had a coworker from South Dakota whose son had a scheduled interview for a great high paying job in Springfield, MA. Dad knew I lived in southern New England and asked my opinion.
I told him the place was a dump and his son should not even show up for the interview.
He discussed it with his son and his son still wanted to use the free plane ticket the potential employee sent him for the interview.
My suggestion at this point was—arrive a couple of hours early and drive in circular patterns, one block at a time, to see everything there was to see within a mile of his prospective employer.
The young man took my advice.
After his airplane flight and rental car vehicle tour was complete he headed directly back to the airport and blew off the interview.
Lol.
The “pound me too” (#metoo) movement and the korporate alignment with it has solidified all government and korporate workplaces into toxic work environments.
So, does this mean people want to have more time to be with their families and even start families?
Who wants to work for a woke boss?
I imagine most of the survey was done in Europe.
I doubt they’d get the same results in most of Asia.
THOSE WHO HAVE NO REAL WORK EXPERIENCE-—ALSO CANNOT EXPLAIN WHAT IS OR ISN’T A BAD WORK PLACE. THEY ALL SEEM TO HAVE PARENTS BASEMENTS TO FALL BACK ON.
THIS ISN’T A GROUP OF PERSONS I EVER WISH TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH.
Learned responsibility as a youngster.
Never lost those Lessons.
IMO-—THIS IS A LEGACY OF THE PARTICIPATION TROPHIES-—
REWARDED FOR JUST SHOWING UP..
SUCK IT UP PARENTS-—AND GRANDPARENTS
YOU ALL THOUGHT PARTICIPATION TROPHIES WERE WONDERFUL
I had more than one discussion at SENIOR CENTER lunches on this topic.
NO-—IT MEANS THEY WANT MORE TIME ON GAMEBOYS & ON FACEBOOK.
THEY REALLY ARE QUITE IMMATURE.
That’s what I figured.
Pay is just one factor. Once you earn enough for basic needs, other factors come in. Usually I left a position for non-pay reasons. I only left once I had another position.
The young people there are getting just a bit ticked off at the amount of hours they are expected to work. Something like sixty IIRC. They have no time to have a life outside of work and amazingly they happen to want that.
You know, have hobbies, friends, go out on dates, get married, have kids, in other words, all the things that make life worth living.
Japan and Taiwan are also going in that direction.
