Russia to Seek 'Rock-Steady' Guarantees of Non-Participation in NATO for Kiev — Diplomat
TASS ^ | 1/24/25

According to Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Ukraine joining NATO "would rule out achieving peace in Ukraine and, more broadly, establishing any security architecture"

MOSCOW, January 24. /TASS/. Moscow will seek guarantees to ensure that Ukraine will never be admitted to NATO, as Ukraine’s accession would make it impossible to achieve peace, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said.

"For us, this is a key element of potential agreements on the conflict in Ukraine and an element of removing the root causes of this conflict. And we will be seeking not only rock-steady legal guarantees, ruling out any Ukrainian membership in NATO, but we will also demand that the alliance itself embrace this policy," the senior Russian diplomat explained.

According to Grushko, Ukraine joining NATO "would rule out achieving peace in Ukraine and, more broadly, establishing any security architecture," a vision that he said is shared by "quite a number of members of the alliance."

"The truth is, there exist different opinions regarding the prospects for admitting Ukraine to NATO inside the alliance," he explained.

Perfectly reasonable, and in return Russia should permanently withdraw from Ukraine.

Thus Ukraine could be a peaceful buffer between NATO and Russia.

Hey you, don’t watch that, watch this
This is the heavy heavy monster sound
The nuttiest sound around
So if you’ve come in off the street
And you’re beginning to feel the heat
Well, listen buster
You better start to move your feet
To the rockinest, rock-steady beat
Of Madness

One step beyond..........

The thing is - how can Ukraine be reassured that Russia will not come back in a few years and invade and grab more land?

Russia signed the 1994 Budapest memorandum to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity. This was ratified by Russia in 2004 under Putin.

The Russians broke that pledge in 2014.

After 2014 most ukrainians thought that Russia had its pound of flesh - it had Crimea and the donbas was de facto under Russia. But Putin invaded again.

If you were Ukrainian, would you believe Russian promises that “this time, pinky-swear, Russia wont’ invade Ukraine for the third time. we broke our previous promises, but this time, cross our harts, we won’t break it again”

That is false - Ukraine was not going to join NATO - it's previous request in 2008 was rejected

But Putin invaded in 2014 and grabbed Ukrainian land - in violation of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum where Russia promised to respect Ukrainian territorial integrity.

And this is the same Putin who has consistently said that he considers Ukraine an "illegitimate country" and that it should be assimilated into Russia

Plus pay roughly $10 trillion to Ukraine in war reparations.

Thus Ukraine could be a peaceful buffer between NATO and Russia.

That could have been the solution any time in the 15 years before 2022. Surprising to hear you suggest it now.

Arrogant and blind DC neocons and their radical Azov puppets instead figured they could hobble Russia and overthrow Russia's government.

Bad choice.

Such lies! Everyone from Bush to NATO General Secretaries are on video saying Ukraine is on a path to NATO membership.

Why is Putin so concerned about Ukraine possibly one day acceding to NATO?

I would think that he would be a lot more worried about the fact that, with Finland's accession to NATO, Russia's border with NATO has now more than doubled.

Thus, NATO troops are now less than a day's march from St. Petersburg! And the supply routes to Russia's White Sea ports are totally exposed!

Further, with Sweden and Finland's accession, the Baltic Sea is now effectively a NATO sea. Russia has been completely bottled up!

Putin has his priorities all mixed up!

Due to his ill-advised (and criminal) attack and invasion of Ukraine, he is now in a far worse geopolitical and military position than he was on Feb. 23, 2022.

The 800,000 Russian dead and wounded, the 10,000 destroyed tanks, and the loss of half his Black Sea Fleet only add to the overall picture of incompetence.

Why should any of us regard Putin as "reasonable?" Instead, he has shown himself to be a very poor military man and an incompetent statesman.

If Russia pulled out, the Russian speakers in the Donbas and Crimea would all be murdered as ‘traitors’ in a bloodbath.

NATO is the problem. It really wasn’t until they kept spreading eastward on to Russia’s doorstep. That was no accident. It was done on purpose and seen as a provocation by Russia. There are quite a few CIA outposts right on their border.

We promised we would not do that. But we did. Actions have consequences for both sides.

If Europe wants NATO, fine. They can build their militaries and fund their actions. At this point in time, many NATO countries are hostile to the USA yet we are supposed to pay the top price in every way for their security.

Hell with that.

How? By launching a "Special Military Operation" and sending columns of battle tanks towards Russia's capital?

Seems to me that it's the other way around: Russia has invaded Ukraine and attempted to overthrow Ukraine's government.
