ESPN host Stephen A. Smith expressed concern over the pushback against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) during President Trump’s second term, believing that competent minorities will miss out on lucrative jobs.
Since Trump’s inauguration this week, the new president’s administration has already instituted numerous measures to gut DEI in the government while encouraging businesses to do the same. In response, Stephen A. Smith told The Will Cain Show that the American right has mishandled the issue.
“I’m concerned about it. I’m certainly not going to celebrate it because I don’t like the way I believe the right is handling this particular issue,” Smith said.

Stephen A. Smith is such an opportunist. He was for Harris, then he seemed sympathetic to Trump and Trump voters, then he’s back to Harris, then he slams the Dems, now he is concerned over Trump policies. No one gives a s___t what this carnival barker says to try to keep himself in the news. I’d say stick to sports but I don’t think anyone gives a s__t what he says about sports either.
Why does this guy’s name keep coming up? I used to watch football, never liked him. But some people think he is worth listening to.
Why?
Stephen A. shows he’s the brains at ESPN.
Sounds like the guy, if his house was on fire, would say, don’t waste water use love.
They talk like getting rid of DEI is getting rid of affirmative action.
Holy crap! A sportscaster is “concerned”? We’ll get right on blocking that one.
Playing devil’s advocate:
He’s worried now people are going to assume every minority hire is DEI by default. That there may be pressure to not hire the actual most qualified person for fear of perception. The pendulum swinging the other extreme.
DEI is racist. We’re either all Americans or we aren’t. Which is it?
He’s worried all minority hires will be perceived as DEI by default regardless of merit, and the pendulum may swing the opposite extreme where people will bypass the most qualified individual for fear of looking too “DEI.”
I usually detest SAS. But when he was on Fox yesterday he was actually “reasonable.” He was willing to listen and then presented his well reasoned point of view.
Color me surprised.
Bull crap. Competent minorities are hard to come by and no company is going to pass up the opportunity to add to their employee list one who can do the job. I dare him to provide one example where this has happened. And for any example he can find, I'll bet a company can show 10 examples of where an incompetent minority was hired because of federal employment quotas for gov't contracts.
Shut up and tell us why the Jags couldn’t convince Liam Coen to become their manager—that’s the kind of analysis you’re being paid to do, sir, not hector me about your melanin.
Smith's entire philosophy is based on his theory that, Racism is as bad as it ever was. Racism, racism, racism, ...
He's the sports commentator world's version of Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson rolled up into one. He's a clown, someone to laugh at.
What about all the competent straight white males who were passed over for lucrative jobs because of their race, gender and sexual orientation under DEI programs? Using the left's logic, they would be entitled to reparations. But all the right wants is meritocracy, where the MOST qualified are hired and promoted, regardless of their Intersectionality Score.
He’s a “loud mouth snort” (apologies to Foghorn Leghorn”).
Affirmative action SHOULD go.
Things get really bad when they become concerned and TROUBLED.
