Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, is recalling more than 63,000 Jeep Cherokees because of a defect that causes the vehicles to lose power and impede parking, increasing the risk of a crash, according to a recall notice posted Wednesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
As a result of a poorly seated input shaft ring, the vehicles' "power transfer unit (PTU) may become damaged and disengage the transmission and differential, resulting in a loss of drive power and/or loss of park function," the recall documents state. "A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash. A loss of park function can cause an unintended vehicle rollaway, which can increase the risk of a crash or injury."

DEI Jeeps alert.
They were a million times better and more reliable when they had the simple straight 6 and none of the fussy computer crap.
As a mechanic I’ve always found the Jeep Cherokee one of the most buggy vehicles with plenty of unusual problems.
I wouldn’t touch a Chrysler product with an 11 foot Hungarian!

When my computer locks up it is annoying but not deadly. When you are in a car driving 60 mph on a freeway and the computer controlling everything locks up....
There is just too much electronics in today’s car (all in the name of “fuel economy” and the environment.
The consumer should be allowed to decide how much is enough.
I know I would rather have a car without so much electronic (which have a limited life and are almost unfix-able at a reasonable cost)

Give me the classic 70s / 80s full size Chief with the 360 or 401. The J10 and 20 trucks as well.
I was never that big on Wagoneers for some reason.
Jeep and electrical quality never seemed to go in the same sentence either.
I went through that enough on a few CJs in my life.
About 18 months ago, my otherwise rock sold reliable Tacoma’s ABS wigged out and engaged randomly several times on the way to the office.
Luckily it was before hitting the interstate and I was a couple miles from home.
Disconnecting the battery cured it but I had it checked anyway. My front pads were almost down to the squeal tabs so I had them replaced. I think I had to have the rotors turned.
I was born in 1940 and had an uncle that had a jeep in the
style of the orginals. I don’t remember the year but it was
a 2 seater up front and a couple benches along each side in
the rear section and had the canvas type covering. I rode in
it some but by todays standards if wasn’t safe when it came
to accidents. jmo.
If these Jeeps rolled off the line at the Warren North Plant on Mound Rd. then maybe it’s workers are back to their old ways of smoking, joking, drinking and who knows what else on their lunch breaks.
In the absence of closed dealerships, where will the recall work take place?
Have a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee straight 6 I bought used $3000 - the thing is a tank, never have had an issue in 20 years.
“the fussy computer crap.“
I’m wondering if sooner or later someones going to build an approximation of an old analog car. I want a new work truck but have put off buying one because I regard my 02 f350 as more reliable. Same for my daily driver a 98 Firebird.
I had a ‘94 that was a beauty. The X dinged it up pretty good in an accident. I wish I had repaired it instead letting them total it. It was lot better performer than the X ever was.
Do people still turn rotors these days?
The more crap auto makers add the more there is to go wrong.
