It;s a good thing we don’t have American “spy ships” gathering intelligence. Same thing goes for other nations. /sarc

They won’t find very, at least based on their political leaders.

Britain can kinda claim territorial waters all over the globe. Meaningless bluster from them. Off the coast of Gibraltar? British waters! India? British waters! Hong Kong? British waters!

Nothing new to see here. Russians (Soviets) have been deploying ELINT trawlers to western coastlines since at least the ‘60s

The real issue here is ‘within British waters’. Yes we all spy, but we do it from international waters or airspace. Yes, we probably push those limits as well, but with a full understanding of potential consequences.

Actually what the Russians are doing is not illegal despite being in “British waters”. The Brits understand that and acknowledge that.

“I changed the Royal Navy’s rules of engagement so that our warships can get closer and better track the Yantar. So far, the ship has complied with international rules of navigation.”

It would be news if they DIDN’T have spy ships out there. We used to see them (trawlers) off Humboldt Bay in the 70s spying on the submarine monitoring Navy installation at Centerville.

“Mr Healey said Yantar entered the “UK exclusive economic zone about 45 miles off the British coast” on Monday.” The UK’s territorial waters extend 12 miles from its coastline. This is almost 4x as far from the UK as that.
