The European Union expects to hold talks with United States officials as it assesses Donald Trump's demands for the bloc to buy more U.S. fuel, a spokesperson said Tuesday.
“The priority is to have a conversation, to engage early, discuss common interests and then be ready to negotiate,” said Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, the European Commission’s spokesperson for energy, responding to a question from POLITICO.
The remarks come hours after Trump was sworn in for a second term as U.S. president. The freshly inaugurated president quickly put the EU in his crosshairs, telling reporters, "The one thing they can do quickly is buy our oil and gas," when asked how the EU could avoid heavy tariffs.

It called negotiations. No wonder the preemptive surrender monkeys in the political/media complex are in hysterics.
Biden BLOWS UP their gas supply from Russia and now Trump comes in and demands they buy our gas. Love it!!!!
It may take years, but some day Europeans will figure out what’s being done to them, and they won’t be happy!
You mean EUtopia might need the U.S.? Remember the treatment PDJT got from the ‘yoops’ last time?
Gas will be part of the Ukraine/Russian Armistice Agreement. That would benefit all parties.
A year ago I was worried Trump would win. Our country got a second chance thank God.
Good for Trump.
Wouldn’t*
If only "green" unicorns could be wired into the grid.....
Problem: When Europe wants to buy energy, so does the rest of the world. Competition. Worldwide capitalism. Free markets. It's just so darn capitalist.....
The irony is Trump has publicly told the UK that we should be exploiting our own shale gas reserves, as has Musk. Labour is refusing to follow this friendly advice. How is it that Trump and Musk are actually more concerned about Britain’s prosperity and freedom than our own government?
This has to be the worst government in Britain since that of King John.
US natural gas production is about 1 trillion cubic meters/year. Consumption is 886 billion cubic meters/yr.
That 886 number is headed up in this unusually cold winter this year.
This leaves roughly 150 billion cubic meters/yr available for export. Mexico is currently getting 93 billion cubic meters of that. 7 billion cubic meters/yr goes to Japan. Another 6 billion cubic meters/yr goes to S. Korea. This adds to 106 billion cubic meters of the 114 billion cubic meters available beyond US domestic consumption.
So there are 8 billion cubic meters/year available for others, like the EU. Note that some of this goes to Caribbean islands and other Central American countries.
Trump can demand the EU buy LNG, but there isn’t going to be much to send, unless somehow the plan is to sacrifice US consumption of nat gas (it’s growing as more electric plants run on nat gas — could return to coal perhaps, though that may make no economic sense to power plants that just invested to switch to natgas).
Oh and btw, not all of the AI data centers plan to power themselves from their personal nuclear reactors. Most expect to be on the grid.
One may want to ship LNG to Europe, but it’s hard to do if you have none available.
No Bob, in case you forgot, it was PUTIN who unilaterally cut off gas to Europe in Sept. 2022 - his brilliant plan to force Europe to stop supporting Ukraine
Then a few months later, sanctions on Russian oil started, cutting out that supply ...
so the US is merely stepping in to fill the void
“No Bob, in case you forgot, it was PUTIN who unilaterally cut off gas to Europe in Sept. 2022 - his brilliant plan to force Europe to stop supporting Ukraine”
Oh, ok, Putin blew up the pipeline. See how far that gets you.
Negotiate? Let them freeze for a while.
Two separate issues here:
- Putin unilaterally, and without provocation, cut off gas to Europe Sept. 1, 2022 (in violation of a freely-signed contract)
- NordStream was a legitimate target in wartime. If Putin had just stayed within his own borders, NordStream would still be operating.
I have NO CLUE as to what you’re talking about. If you want us to believe Putin blew up his own pipeline, then, once again, you’re on the WRONG web site.
Well, well, well.
The US was NOT at war with Russia when we blew up their pipeline.
And your proof that the US did it is ...?
