Waives CEQA and Coastal Act requirements for reconstruction, extends law against price gouging

What you need to know: Governor Gavin Newsom today issued an executive order to streamline the rebuilding of homes and businesses destroyed in the recent Southern California firestorms.

LOS ANGELES — Governor Gavin Newsom today signed an executive order to suspend permitting and review requirements under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the California Coastal Act to allow victims of the recent fires to restore their homes and businesses faster. “When the fires are extinguished, victims who have lost their homes and businesses must be able to rebuild quickly and without roadblocks. The executive order I signed today will help cut permitting delays, an important first step in allowing our communities to recover faster and stronger. I’ve also ordered our state agencies to identify additional ways to streamline the rebuilding and recovery process.”

Governor Gavin Newsom

The executive order issued by Governor Newsom will:

Suspend CEQA review and California Coastal Act permitting for reconstruction of properties substantially damaged or destroyed in recent Southern California wildfires. Direct state agencies to identify additional permitting requirements, including provisions of the Building Code, that can safely be suspended or streamlined to accelerate rebuilding and make it more affordable. Extend protections against price gouging on building materials, storage services, construction, and other essential goods and services to January 7, 2026, in Los Angeles County. Commit to working with the Legislature to identify statutory changes that can help expedite rebuilding while enhancing wildfire resilience and safety.

Governor Newsom will continue to work administratively and with the Legislature to help those affected by the recent fires rebuild what they have lost.

A copy of the executive order can be found here.

This is after Carolla's rant saying all the red tape will turn people into Republicans.

Newsom says, "NO RED TAPE FOR MY PEEPS!"

If waiving all this is a way to build 'better and strong'.... why were they doing it before the fire?

Is just for the elites in L.A. or does it apply to other Californians building homes?

Fires are still burning and he’s looking for money. From the federal govt. from me. After being told by Trump/fed govt to do fire prevention

And Californians are ok with this. People with multi millions to spend on property

Stinks to high heaven

Much of San Francisco burned to the ground in 1906 and within a few years the houses, schools and businesses were rebuilt. How?? I think they should figure out that question and follow the same plan.

Yep.

L.A. 2.0 is trending on twitter:

Governor Gavin Newsom is launching “LA 2.0,” a plan to rebuild and reimagine Los Angeles ahead of hosting the World Cup, Super Bowl, and Olympics.

Speaking with Meet the Press, he called it a chance to showcase LA’s pride while transforming the city after devastating wildfires.

By bypassing essential government agencies like the Coastal Commission and allowing houses to be built without the wise oversight that these agencies provide, Newsome is taking the side of the rich elites over the poor smelt or snail darter or whatever poor creatures will be steamrolled into extinction.

SAVE THE SMELT!

They could rebuild their homes as they were, or they could contract with some of the biggest housing developers who already have many housing plans, blueprints, etc that are already up to the latest fire and earthquake codes.
