Child Star Rory Sykes, Born Blind and Suffered from Cerebral Palsy, Dies in L.A. Fires as Mom Tried to Save Him

Former Australian child star Rory Sykes, who was born blind and had cerebral palsy, died Wednesday in the California wildfires despite his mother’s frantic efforts to save him from their burning Malibu home as she claimed available water was “switched off.”

Shelley Sykes said in a post on X her 32-year-old son had lived with her on a 17 acre property in Malibu and after she lost the water supply to hoses she was using to extinguish embers on the home’s roof.

“It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of my beautiful son @Rorysykes to the Malibu fires yesterday,” Sykes said in a post on social media site X – formerly known as Twitter.

Poor California. A debacle of a disaster and no Republicans in sight to blame it on.

The mother said the water to their home was cut off, and the city denies it.

I believe the woman did lose water pressure, but if it was because all water mains except those to hydrants were shut off, or because ongoing firefighting efforts to fight the fire were using so much water there was none that made it to houses OR hydrants in some areas, I cannot say.

17 Acres? Should’ve had a well, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a prohibition on private wells in the area.

Why should it matter WHY there was no water, aside from an upcoming lawsuit?

Man, if California wasn’t in a deep, deep hole before, situations like these are going to totally bankrupt it.

5th, 8th largest ‘economy’ in the world? All down the rat hole. Literally and figuratively.

Prayers up for all CA FReepers. :(

More proof that we need 6’ 3” burly MEN in all of our homes to help us in the event of an emergency. ‘Dear Old Mom’ isn’t strong enough to drag any of us out of a fire, let alone a slight, lesbian ‘firefighter.’

I’ve got one on hand, but he’s aging out rapidly, LOL! ;)

Prayers up for all affected by these fires. I fear the death toll will rise significantly. CA is as inept at locating the bodies as they are at handling Fires.
Towards the end of the article is the Mum’s statement that her son isn’t even counted in the death toll because cadaver dogs haven’t located his body.

Can the Federal government take over California? At least that portion of it? This disaster has taken on power to mess with the welfare of the whole country.

A “slight lesbian firefighter?” Did you not see them? I thought one of them was a dude. That dyke could play guard in the NFL.

Just give it back to Mexico. Let them deal with it.

They will somehow try to blame it on Trump.

What’s will CA’s ranking be for “best state to retire in” after this?

She only went “500 yards” away, so it’s not like she abandoned him, not suggesting that. But if you have 17ac in Malibu you ought to be able to afford a vehicle suited to needs, and all the necessary adaptive equipment — so as not to be compelled to leave a vulnerable son. Especially on an errand that is essentially to “fight city hall.” The authorities and govt services are tough to stir, even on a nice day, and on this day the city was on fire.

“The mother said the water to their home was cut off, and the city denies it.”

They use ‘smart’ water meters (like ‘smart’ electric meters) in California now, so they certainly can ‘select’ which homes will have water, and which will not, if they choose to do so.

Bernie Sanders is working on that. He recently said that the California fires were caused by Climate Change. And the Republicans are at fault for not spending more money to fight this (nonexistent) problem.

Sanders’ remarks would actually be amusing, except that a large chunk of Americans will believe what he said. And it’s not because those Americans are all necessarily stupid.

It’s because the mainstream media will back up the Climate Change nonsense. Relentless propaganda will have its effect.

Poor mom, she didn’t have strength to pick up her son who is an adult now. Went for help but they were too late. House was fully enveloped by the time she got back.

Very sad but not sure anything could have been done - the fires moved so quickly, spreading with 100 mph winds:

I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a prohibition on private wells in the area.

My relatives there (who all successfully evacuated) often refer to "water nazis." They are constantly getting cudgeled by threats and measures to deal with water shortage. While it certainly is a challenge, it's convenient to those in charge, not unlike the medieval danger of heresy and witches. Keep them in fear, keep them in thrall.

Looters right now are blue-collar looters, but soon the white-collared will move in on the feast. LA in ashes, lawyers in clover. For decades.
