As devastating wildfires continue to ravage Los Angeles County, fire-tracking app Watch Duty has added 600,000 users in the last 24 hours seeking real-time updates and critical information. The app, run by a nonprofit, relies on hundreds of volunteers including active and retired firefighters to provide accurate and timely information.

The LA Times reports that in the wake of the catastrophic fires wreaking havoc across Los Angeles County, the Watch Duty app, a fire-tracking platform run by the nonprofit Sherwood Forestry Service, has seen an unprecedented surge in users. According to CEO John Mills, the app has gained 600,000 new users in the last 24 hours alone, adding to its existing 7.2 million yearly active users at the end of 2024.

CalFire has a decent site. They publish updates regularly. Have decent maps. You can find a photo map(ostensibly from space) mapping out evacuation zones, warning zones. From the looks of the map it would be about 3-4 miles from fire to Beverly Hill...Just my guess. Caveat Emptor.

But will it track if the fires are spreading in a diverse, equitable and inclusive way?

The latest evacuation zone for the Sunset fire isn’t far from Beverly Hills.

An ember can travel with heavy winds up to two miles. It’s within that by now. Still has to go through West Hollywood.

Why all the obsession with the California wild fires?

Its not like its a “natural” disaster. Its MAN MADE by omission, all the things they DIDN”T DO to prevent/minimize their impact.

It would be like not cleaning your chimney and freaking out over a chimney fire that burned your house down.

CLEAR THE UNDERBRUSH. BUILD FIRE ROADS. BUILD FIRE BREAKS (Log portions of land to create them). MAKE SURE YOU HAVE WATER AT ALL FIRE HYDRANTS.

But we can’t afford it! Why are you building the $310 billion high-speed rail project? And all the other Liberal NONSENSE you WASTE all your money on.

Fighting wildfires without these things being done is a JOKE! Risking lives, equipment, planes helicopters, chemicals by the planeload.

Don’t “FEEL” sorry for the rich people who lost their homes. What did they do to PREVENT this? VOTE DEMOCRAT? Yep.

“Its MAN MADE by omission, all the things they DIDN’T DO to prevent/minimize their impact.”

Well stated, I have agree. The devastation was years in the making of things not done.
